RE: 2020 Geneva motor show cancelled
Discussion
As much as I couldn't give a monkey's about COVID-19, I do wonder what this policy means for the new F1 and MotoGP seasons.
And you all seem to be forgetting the most obvious one - football matches. Pretty sure not all 52,000 people who turn up at St.James Park are all without disease (insert jokes here) and who knows where people have flown from/to/when/with?
As crazy as this seems, I fear there may be trouble ahead....

I'm surprised at the negative comments about motor shows on here.
I used to love going to the UK motor shows years ago for sure, but the UK gave up on them a long time ago. So for me you only need the smallest excuse to scrap them...so this isn't much of a surprise really. Things look like they will get very bleak indeed though...once concerts/football matches and all other sporting events etc get banned. The end of the world is coming by the look of it.
As a lot of the exhibitor/manufacturer costs are already sunk into this, and stands probably already mostly in place, I'm a bit surprised they don't just continue with the show but make it a strictly media-only event.
This could be spread out over a few more days to reduce numbers and with embargoes freed up online, i.e. just take the sheet off the new EV in the morning first thing, and put all the razzmatazz on Facebook/Twitter

I have booked flights, car parking on the Tuesday.
Since we cannot get refunds on any of those unless EasyJet cancel, might as well enjoy a day out there.
Anyone got some recommendations (car or no car related).
It is a shame about the event but can see the concern given lots of people from around the world attend this event.

The central area by the station is not exactly beautiful. Better if you go to the lake and cross to the other side I guess.
Depends, there are some amazing views next to Geneva main station.https://goo.gl/maps/8i7kNbWJXp5NLMjL7
Worth checking out.

Wouldn't work. The operational people alone would account for most (if not more) than the 1,000 allowed to attend. This could be spread out over a few more days to reduce numbers and with embargoes freed up online, i.e. just take the sheet off the new EV in the morning first thing, and put all the razzmatazz on Facebook/Twitter
I've worked on every Geneva motor show for the last 15 years and was due to fly out with my team tomorrow.
A very, very expensive exercise for the manufacturers if they cannot claim insurance wise. Probably the death knell for motor shows if it's completely unrecoverable.
For ref. overall footfall over the entire motor show period can be as much as 500,000 people.
It's no surprise... Given pretty much all of Italy's automotive world exists in the North, in the 'infected zone', just the Italian's turning up will bring massive risk of the disease spreading.
Having half a million people from across the world descending on one building when there is a global outbreak really isn't a good idea.
England are supposed to be playing Italy at Wembley on the 27th March, wonder if that will go ahead?

Shouldn't that be 'less than 10 posts'?Fewer items such as eggs, or people; or less quantity such as sand, or water.

Unless you have been behind the scenes as they set up the Geneva show, you probably would not realise how big a gig this is. Going to cost a fortune and not just for the visitors and manufacturers.
I was involved in helping with one display on one stand. Cost 60K plus and kept three small businesses and two local tradesman going for three weeks. Dread to think how much the two storey stand cost. Then there are the electricians, cleaners, carpenters and painters who would have been working up to the the last few minutes until the show opened. Presumably they have been laid off. Then there are the apparel sellers on the stand who have geared up for a show that won't happen. Hotels, transport companies. The show had a car park full of expensive car transporters.
Understand why it has happened, but the pain will be spread way beyond visitors and the manufacturers.
Totally agree with above, there is a massive imbalance between public information providing a service to prevent the spread of a virus and the feeling of panic which the media and social networks seem to be feeding on in some sort of orgy of doom, I was involved in helping with one display on one stand. Any rational human being when confronted with the actual numbers can do the maths, It appears to me that the snowflake generation loves this sort of drama.
When the numbers are looked at in 12 months time I humbly suggest that more Chinese people are alive after a covid 19 year by sitting at home for 6 weeks than would normally die by rolling the dice and driving their car every to work every day over the same period.
Back home In a normal year well over 10,000 + will die in the uk from “basic old school flu related deaths”
But that’s not news as it happens every year.
More people died just from drugs/alcohol abuse in Scotland last year, than deaths so far on the whole planet form this killer corona virus...
We are all going to die some day, from something and it seems that if you are over 80 this year your chances of dying if you no longer hold a driver’s license now includes a special flu virus with a name, rather the ordinary flu with no name or a stroke, heart attack, Alzheimer’s, something sexual transmitted From tinder, or heading heavy football’s before 1975 have all notched up by 1%
Realistically the same st that killed 100% of people last year will no doubt account for 99.9 of mortally in 2020.
Quick rule of thumb is to take any number from China and divide by 20 to put it in a uk context, makes it easier to understand, Or by 200 to make it Scotland equivalent.
The numbers also work in reverse, so take uk deaths for anything x 20 will give you an approximate Chinese population equivalence

FYI

Just take chinas old numbers and divide by 6 to give 2 months, and extrapolate only 25% less journeys/deaths as a random figure
China is officially safer today than this time last year (2018 figures)

Does anyone know the policy of recovering flight costs with BA? Was due to visit next week.
I'm assuming I just have to suck it up since it isn't BA cancelling their flight. Is travel insurance likely to cover me?
We were booked via easyJet... Easyjet have said so far that as they will still fly you to Geneva, there's no refunds as you can still go! I'm assuming I just have to suck it up since it isn't BA cancelling their flight. Is travel insurance likely to cover me?
Travel insurance have said no, but I didn't quiz them on the fact it's a government thing, not just that the show is cancelled on a whim by the organisers, so may call them again.
But think it may be a case of sucking it up... At least the show tickets are cheap!

I feel this may be the thin end of the wedge.
What next? Le Mans?
There will be bigger problems to worry about if Coronavirus is still spreading in the middle of summer! What next? Le Mans?
I was supposed to be going to Geneva as I’m involved with one of the car launches. I feel for anyone that has had to make bookings and can’t get a refund.
