Will Coronavirus hit used car prices?
Discussion
I personally wish dealers would use email more, as a shift worker i am unable to use my phone during the day so by the time i get home at 8pm they are all shut anyway!
Also, the vehicles i have bought in the past have never been that common so i have had to travel a good few miles to see them, so getting a rough idea of px value or if they will even entertain a px over email is very beneficial to me and helps establish if it is worth travelling on my rare days off.
The ones that send the "pop in and see us" standard reply just get dumped....if they cant be bothered to actually read what im asking, (i.e would my car be of interest in px? I live 50miles away) then they clearly arent that nice to deal with in person.

I have never sold a car in 26 years of selling, to anyone who emails or phones even, about load space dimensions on a vehicle.
These people are just data collectors and never deal, the dimensions they want to hear are just non existing or totally ridiculous.
The same as I have never sold a vehicle to a person who turns up on a bicycle.
All they do is cycle around the pitch and then disappear, and even if you can manage to engage in a conversation by sticking a stick in there spokes, it's just complete nonsense coming out of there mouths.
I must be the exception as I spent a week back and forth emailing a dealer about the exact loadspace dimensions of a Ford Tourneo Custom minibus. I'd got a camping pod and needed to know if it would ft once rear seats are removed. I travelled to the other end of the country to pick it up, with trust and respect needed on both sides to do the deal. These people are just data collectors and never deal, the dimensions they want to hear are just non existing or totally ridiculous.

Prior to that I found a very helpful Arnold Clark dealership who also were keen to give me the dimensions of a Hyundai i800 - that was snapped up before I could put a deposit down as it was in the paintshop awaiting repairs.

My last 3 cars were bought when I turned up on a bike. Two wheels are my choice for the commute and I am really not going to waste my time diverting the usual route to ride around random car dealers without the clear intent and purpose of buying a car.The same as I have never sold a vehicle to a person who turns up on a bicycle.

And this is the point. None of us actually buy a house over email, but it would be absolutely legitimate to ask a question about a property over email with a view to then viewing it in person. In my experience estate agents as an example are used to fielding initial enquiries over email, then seeing that person later to view the property. They don't bawl and moan when they get an enquiry that isn't someone walking through the door with their cash in hand.
The point here is that dealers will have to keep moving to what customers need. What a lot of us need is flexibility in terms of communication options, accuracy of data, and less of the smarmy hard-sell. The latest situation just accelerates that.
Not every communication medium will have the same conversion rate nor should it. If a company is happy to leave business on the table then they might eventually die out as others show ability to pick up that custom...

Having cycled for 30 years now, if I can’t get a bike in a car either complete or by dropping front wheel I’m not interested. Years ago I bought an Impreza wrx Sti estate only once I was happy my bike would go in the back. In fact when I take my cars for service I always throw my bike in the back to get home/work
I like to laugh at all the folks scrabbling around for loan cars because they’re incapable of walking a few miles somewhere for a day.
Be it bikes , dogs, children, sports gear, people buy cars to cart junk about in. To think otherwise is a bit daft.

I used facebook to advertise a car for the first time about 8 weeks ago, Discovery.
It sold in 2 days, since then I have sold a 320d Touring, 330i Touring, and an A4 S-Line avant, and all have gone within a matter of days, certainly less than a week.
I have to say I'm amazed at how well it performs as a platform.
I did stick my 64 plate 5 Series Touring up on there as well last week, on Thursday I think it was and I had 2 people offer asking, but then we went into all this with my business closed and decided I would be better keeping it. But as a sales platform it is impressive. But there are loads of "Swap for modded Civic blad?" type messages you have to politely decline.
Curious about this. Definitely fed up of paying autotrader fees.It sold in 2 days, since then I have sold a 320d Touring, 330i Touring, and an A4 S-Line avant, and all have gone within a matter of days, certainly less than a week.

Do you just use the free marketplace? Or pay to promote the listing too?
Sounds like I should give it a whirl!

I actually lol'd it, as do my collewgue, it was an automatic response, it was bloody funny, fortunately he also saw the funny side.
I fear the thread has derailed a bit but seeing as it has I always open up a transaction with a message or email. Sometimes a fairly mundane question, something I may even know the answer to. The response is then a good gauge as to whether I want to continue dealing with the seller or salesman.
If they're illiterate or can't be arsed or simply ignore the email I move on.
I think it's saved me more than I've lost.

I would also like to add that the last 2 times I have walked into a main dealer I have been totally ignored and ended up walking out again!
My experience, too. Main VW dealer, looking at buying a Tiguan. Struggled to get a salesman to talk to me, and when I did, he pretty well said ‘there’s one over there, have a look at it’ and walked off. No discussion on model types, merits, benefits, performance etc etc. and why I shouldn’t look at a Q3/Q5/Karoq. He really couldn’t be bothered.Different story at the Skoda dealer not half a mile away. Much better service all round.

You arrange it in advance, if nothing is available you rent a cheap run about for a few quid.
If i am not doing the work myself I'll use a specialist 2hrs drive away, cycle that back.

What's a 'few miles' to you?
After I've dropped my van off for MOT I walk home, it's 15/20 mins, when I take my Lotus in however, that is too far to bike it, I use their free courtesy car, I then laugh at all the cyclists risking their lives and get soaked, and at how they can't use the motoway, I howl... it provides an enormous amount of pleasure and laughter and really make my day, I think of nothing else, I'm really smug about it.
Then I'm home 1hr.25 later knowing I don't have to cycle it back either regardless of weather.

I went into a couple of VW dealerships last year. I was keen to buy an up! GTi and wanted to discuss finance. They could not have been less helpful. Truly appalling customer service. Different story at the Skoda dealer not half a mile away. Much better service all round.
