Having had a mk3 mr2 I agree entirely with that review. Such a delightful fun car and a delight on road or track. I might get another but one with more power at some point, it could easily handle 250bhp without upsetting it. The article mentions the std brakes too, I have never caned a car as hard on track with such cheap standard brakes that refused to fade or die! I think it cost me 54 quid in total for pads and discs when I put new on!

+1

(another MR2 mk3 owner here). The turn in is an absolute delight and the brakes are outstanding (light weight helps there!). Not tried mine on track though (yet). Maybe after this dumb crisis is over!

I've always fancied a Mk3 MR2 due to its renowned handling. However I've also never quite accepted how abjectly fugly it looks, especially in comparison to the Mk1 and Mk2.

I've never heard a bad word said about the MK3 MR2 and I'd love a go in one. They are great value too.

It's a bit marmite in that respect I guess. I've always like the mk3, and I love the look of the mk1 too. mk2 I'm a bit less keen on.

You could always get one of those god-awful ferrari bodykits for it biggrin No, scratch that, don't do that smile

You're not looking at it btw when you're inside it flying round corners, grinning from ear-to-ear!

Two things to watch for though before anyone dives in for a "cheap" mr2 mk3.
The rear subframe can rot through and potentially fall off/mot fail. Seen some shocking pics of rot there.
And the engines on the earlier mk3 are often worn oil burners, shedloads of cars have been scrapped due to worn bores/burning oil/smoking. Buy at your peril but if you get a nice one they are fab.

It's the bug-eyed and limp-wristed hairdresser styling in comparison to the first two imo.

Has to have been the Pug 205 Gti 1.9. If ever a chassis was crying out for more power, this was it.

Loved my MR2 Roadster. All I did to it was a powerflow so I could actually hear the engine with the roof down, some lowering springs (originals snapped), new tyres all round, alignment, chassis brace, all of which were either standard maintenance or very cheap, and the thing was just brilliant fun to drive. Anyone who only has a fairly low budget and has little need for practicality should try one of these.

Yeh but the 309 was no 205, every ounce of bhp could be extracted. Could almost compare it to my Golf 7.5 R, a car that comes into its own when the conditions are not right!

Have you driven a 309Gti? Every bit as good for wringing out as the 205 I can promise you!

If not better being a little longer, slightly less "frisky" smile
