Sorry in advance, I know this is well over thread budget but I really do value the expertise that resides in this thread.

I don't know much about this generation of 5 series, they don't seem to get much airtime on here. It looks like my ideal car, I'm hoping you can talk me out of it with tales of woe on how bad this model/engine are as I've just spent far more than my 9-3 is worth fixing a leak.

If you enjoy expensively chasing leaks (of the oil and coolant variety) that engine is a great choice!

That looks lovely. Shame it doesn't have comfort seats though.
I currently have an e61 530i M-sport e61 which has been near faultless in the 12 months I have owned it - I have done around 10,000 relatively trouble free miles in it and it is now on 135k. It is a really comfortable cruiser. I would imagine an extra 100+ Bhp would only add to the enjoyment, but there has been a fair bit on here already about the pitfalls of the 4.8 BMW power plant.

I would say that the one you have highlighted is quite pricey, particularly given the pretty meagre spec. No sport or comfort seats, big roof or logic 7 hifi.

Mine is worth around £3k and I wouldn’t be tempted to part with anywhere near £5k to swap.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-E350-PETROL-AU...

Had a "A GEARBOX OVERHAUL COSTING NEARLY £1800", so may have had the plate replaced, although no mention of when, also at some stage it had a 2nd hand SBC fitted, which sounds abit dodgy.

It's over in Wales and no reg plate to be seen though.

Is the 350 engine somewhat troublesome at times as well, I think it involves an expensive repair with the balancer shaft?

It seems to be a pretty nice spec overall though.
Yes, the 350 engine has some issues. I think if you know the VIN you can check if it is an affected engine.
It is a very early engine, so is in the range of dodgy sprockets, it appears from it's location, that there is no real way to check it, without taking off most of the front half of the engine.

To those who work at Mercedes, is there a way to find out if a dealer has ever worked on the sprocket, or a way to tell, looking at the engine, if it has ever been taken apart, which may indicate the work has been done?

It sounds like a nice car, it had a gearbox overhaul around 2017 with the V.G.S? unit replaced with new filter and fluid, the 2nd hand SBC pump was installed a few weeks ago and has a 3 month warranty, although I thought the price of a new one had come down quite a bit in recent times. Also had new brakes all round last year.

It's basically just the sprockets that is an issue, it has a nice spec too.

Insurance is cheap, however the cost of replacing the shaft and the 10 or so other bits to do at the same time are not cheap and not im my budget. At £1K or £1.5k it would be worth a punt, at £3K it's the dilema of do you just scrap it and lose all the money or do you fix it and be in for 2x it's worth.

What sort of nutter would I have to be to take a punt on this. I don't have a lot of beardage on the XF front or know what goes wrong with these bad boys.
I wouldn't class you as a 'nutter' but then I maybe a bit biased. wink

On a serious note if you're interested and want to know exactly what has been done on this car drop me a DM or a text message with your email and I'll send over the details.

I think that's overpriced, personally. The spec is low. It's a 12+ year old estate with a big engine; they're pretty rare but it's surely a buyer's market right now....because so many people are after a big V8 12+ year old estate car hehe

The engine in these is very nice, but check for oil leaks, coolant leaks, oil from the exhaust, oil leaks, coolant leaks, oil leaks and once you've done that, just check for some more oil leaks too.

Agreed. Expensive and potentially problematic engine (valve stem seals...I was under the impression these were a 'when' rather than 'if' failure).

Are oil leaks a problem? whistle

Thanks all, after the saga of my 9-3 oil leak and realisation of how hard it is to get oil off of block paving you've managed to persuade me to let this one pass.

If my saved searches are anything to go on, V8 estates are in demand. I agree this one is a bit over-priced but I doubt it will hang around for long.

Bio washing powder mixed into a paste and scrubbed in left overnight then washed off is the easiest way of removing oil stains I've found

Bloody hell and that interior... A threadist definately needs to scoop that up..!!
That interior is absolutely gopping.
Agreed.

I can count the number of car seats that look good in two-tone leather on the fingers of no hands.
I'm sure there's at least one example, but I am struggling to think of it.
I'm not being wilfully contrary, and I am rather hungover (barbecue, fire, a real no-kidding fire, garden boules that became uber-competitive, and far too many bottles of my best red wine) but I think that interior looks OK. I could certainly live with it. But did I mention I'm hungover?

To be fair it spent 11 of those years sitting in a showroom.
Why on earth would you want to display such a thing?
I’m sure a lot of these had visible rust in the first year it two. I worked with a guy that had one (over 20 years ago), he lived near the sea in NE Scotland, the car basically dissolved.

Very nice! Hugely tempted by one of these as everything I’ve seen on film or print is full of praise and it just looks like a huge amount of fun.

Proof will be in the driving of course. Please do post more details as you have them.
