Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 16]
Discussion
I don't think we've had this yet. Friend of mine is selling his M140i, and is fairly seriously looking at this S8... any thoughts? I don't know very much about them

It needs Bentley badges and they're not Hemi's, it's a model designation rather than a technical description, the ASA should've been involved imo.
Well every days a school day, I thought these had the hemi design head not that I'd buy one https://www.evo.co.uk/chrysler/300c/6366/chrysler-...

Having recently been unfurloughed and (by the sounds of it) working from home until the end of the year, it's possibly time to chop in the diesel MINI and get a suitable summer... palate cleanser.
Naturally, I've been looking at everything from shonky French 90's hatchbacks to revvy Jap coupes. But this is the barge thread so rear wheel drive, multiple cylinders... and sill rot. I like E39s so this works well.
Current visions around my head include the 'long bonnet rising in front of you' view, and burbling down a dual carriageway with all windows down listening to something funky as the sunsets behind me.
Stipulations:
- Doesn't have to be cosmetically perfect.
- Needs to be quick enough to beat sh*tehawks in their financed whatever from the lights because I am a child
This has led me to the following:
Under budget:
E39 535i (the gamble) - £1250
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-BMW-535i-Auto-V8-L...
What could go wrong apart from the cooling system imploding when I look at the expansion tank wrong.
.
I reckon this would be a great buy with plenty of money in it to make it nicer. Buy it for a grand, put another into it and you'll have very lovely £2k car. Not sure it'll be all that quick though.Naturally, I've been looking at everything from shonky French 90's hatchbacks to revvy Jap coupes. The CLK55 does look lovely mind.

Looks fantastic, but I think race=prepped is probably a bit of artistic licence. Those multi-fit budget wheels definitely need to go.W00DY said:

Almandine (?) has to be THE colour for a C215 CL, doesn't it? I have always had a soft spot for these, absolutely lovely looking things and I was very tempted by a 216 but fear got the better of me and ended up with the LS.therealsamdailly said:

Does the pile of bills inc. a replacement or repaired Autobox? Does the MoT history show it's been done some mileage over the last three years or as it been parked up as the Autobox is broken?https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-S8-D2-2001/1642654...

What's the barge consensus on non-essential maintenance?
I have no idea when my Rover's cambelt was changed (if ever), apparently it should be done at 90k or 6 years - it is at 55k, but is obviously 19 years old.
I don't intend to do it, given it would probably cost more than I paid for the car, and it certainly isn't something I would do on my driveway.
As someone who has chosen to put off a cambelt change on a cheap car and then had it snap and both strand me in a remote car park and write off the car, leaving me feeling like quite the fool, I'm now inclined to get it done on even cheap sheds. It's a bit of a sword of Damocles hanging over you every time you use the car otherwise, and I really do like to be as sure as I can be that a car won't let me down.I have no idea when my Rover's cambelt was changed (if ever), apparently it should be done at 90k or 6 years - it is at 55k, but is obviously 19 years old.

If your car is on the original belt the rubber is very old and far more likely to break than if the belt had done 55k miles in 2 years. Tensioners will be old too and time kills stuff more surely than mileage. I'd certainly take out a £5 bet that it'll snap in the next 15k miles.
ETA - what a bellend that marinabrian bloke is on the Rover forums, there was absolutely no need to be such a condescending arse!

Yes there seems to be a very amusing running battle on the Rover forum between someone who claims a cambelt should be done on the button ever six years and another guy who claims the belts are indestructible and he is just wasting his money If your car is on the original belt the rubber is very old and far more likely to break than if the belt had done 55k miles in 2 years. Would it be possible to inspect the belt to get an idea whether it is on the original belt or not? It seems I can get the parts for not too much - £139.99 - https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/kv6-engine-par... - it's just about finding someone who knows what they're doing. If anyone has a suggestion for a time-served Rover mechanic in South-East London, I'm all ears.

I only looked at the photos. I think I've heard elsewhere that KV6 cambelts can last for years.SpeckledJim said:
I don't think changing the belts is a good idea on only value grounds.
Especially if you don't expect to keep the car for more than a year. If it pops you can get another car for the cost of the belts job, and if it doesn't, you win.
My main concern is ensuring it doesn't go pop on the M25 on the way to our staycation destination. Otherwise I'm not much fussed as I do so few miles and the car is worth so little. At the same time, £500 isn't too much money for peace of mind.Especially if you don't expect to keep the car for more than a year. If it pops you can get another car for the cost of the belts job, and if it doesn't, you win.
