No response from the S600TT seller, probably for the best.

Anyone wants a cheap runabout this is on Facebook in hull:

Suspension looks a little high on the front, missing some parking sensors. But it is the galvanised model so shouldn’t be much rust. Can’t get him down to £500 so no good for me :-)
Would anyone here actually buy a car from an advert like that? Instant no from me ...

The X350 XJ will be the most reliable outside a Lexus. The biggest problem is air suspension, but that's very fixable for reasonable money by most "premium"standards.

To be honest I'd just tell them it's impossible and walk away, unless they give up on the mileage/age thing or up the budget.
This. You're on a hiding to nothing.

Inevitably whatever you find will soon have something wrong with it, and inevitably it will be entirely your fault. You're supposed to know what you're talking about!!!

Agreed. They want a premium car which isn't old and doesn't have high mileage for under £5k. Jog on!
I think the best bet is to go for the simplest car you can get with the 'premium badge', say C Class Merc, 3 Series BMW etc.

As far as X350s go, mine has been reliable, but as with any older pretty complex car, they are not cheap to maintain properly if you want to keep them nice. I have the history on mine from new and I put it on a spreadsheet (sad, I know paperbag), it adds up to just over £16k now. The car is almost 15 years old, and it has never had anything catastrophic fail - touch wood! No air suspension faults as yet either.

I can't help but think that whatever you find for them, you'll get nothing but earache every time something goes wrong. I'd leave them to it if it was me!
Maybe it's just me, but I don't view a 3 series or C class as a premium car. Premium badge, yes, but premium car? Nah.

Why not? It's in very good conditions. hehe

I wonder what the other problems could be, hypothetically, if it were without issue!!

Fully agree having had used / brand new 3 series / C class they are in no way ‘premium’ even when you throw 50% of the purchase price at options.

My 8 year old ML is much more ‘premium’ that my 2018 C Class or 2017 CLA (obviously) were.

I’d walk away from helping, big, old, expensive cars will break, if they are of a non-barge (or petrol head) variety then these people may also begrudge paying for servicing and consumables which will not be cheap either.

Although I ran a 15 yo 100K Alfa for £0 for 12 months (excluding depreciation / MOT cost), so what do I know.

A big Lexus will last forever but will still need servicing, tyres, brakes, etc.

I’d probably go for a XJ350, if it were my own cash, for a friend I’d direct them to the nearest Toyota Aygo.

Just catching up with this thread, easily one of my favourites. Unfortunately I should have been updating my CV! Oops.

I enjoyed the Jaguar that ended up as a Rover saga, what was that seller thinking!

Keep up the good work chaps, I shall continue to follow.

Me neither, but wasn't it the badge that they wanted?

I'm a little conflicted with this statement.

I mean I agree, I don't gaze longingly at adverts for sub £5k A4's or 3 series like I do Citroen XM's or 500SE's or LS460's

But I bought new a 2017 335d Touring which I still adore. If you need to put a couple of kids and a dog in something, and still crack 62 in less than 5 seconds*, your options are limited to a Golf R, Audi RS4/6 or C/E63 AMG or a 335d. To me it feels very well made, 50k miles in nothing squeaks or creaks. I realise it doesn't look impressive, its the same as every other on the road, but it impresses me every time I drive it.

As a quick Rover update, I think I've now spent more on tools than I did the car (most of which I probably will never use...). It's all getting a little out of hand. Oil, filters, spark plugs on the way, drop links to fit on Friday. Here's hoping I manage!

This is how you get a bargain, let’s say someone with a better command of the English language purchased it. Cleans it and finds some gravel to park it on. £1500 all day long.

cough..The SR doesn't have the Mark Levinson stereo or a sunroof. You want an SE, which has the perfect spec (everything minus the pre-WW2 DVD screens in the headrests that look rubbish). There is still a problem with cats being stolen from these and it has put me off. No-one seems to have come up with a properly effective bracket or similar to protect them. Annoying as would be the perfect fit as our family car.

Well that's impressive... For someone who hadn't twirled a spanner before you're certainly diving right in. Bravo. biggrin

Did you ever call the dealer about the Jag?

I wonder if they still have it or if they have sold it on to someone quickly.

Remember, barges like to live in pairs wink.

This is why I now only live my bargelife vicariously through others in this thread.

I still haven't twirled many spanners (well, other than to get the wheels off to diagnose the supension noise!) - but willing to dive in and give it a go!

I didn't, no. Might as well save the extra cash for tools and the various bits we need on the house. Though if it turns out driveway mechanics is my bag, maybe I'll get another cheap snotter to work on. Insurance is the difficulty, don't want to insure two cars at £700+ a year - but maybe a classic car on classic insurance is the solution ... I can fit two cars on my drive!
