Thanks guys, lots of good stuff there. I did like that example as I tend to think diesels like to work and miles area, but 4c shocks is probably one to avoid, although it is very close so possibly worth a look. 35mpg is a bit disappointing though. XC70 would be nice for mountain biking duites.
The golf is on 216k and will want a new clutch'/flywheel and probably a DPF clean in the next year as well as the belt is coming up, so don't know whether to sell it while it's working well and get something a bit bigger/more bargey or to put the money in knowing it's been good so far and 60mpg and cheap tax/insurance means it'll pay it back soon enough assuming nothing explodes soon.
35mpg was with lord gears, I'm sure the manual would do better on fuel.

I'm out of touch. I think 35 mpg would be pretty extraordinary. Mind you I don't really care - I filled up with 98 RON Super Plus at 45 cents/litre yesterday.
I was always happy with the economy, I think that is very good for a car of that size/comfort. I am somewhat envious at the price you are paying for fuel. It would mean no more diesel for me if we could get fuel for so little.CharlesdeGaulle said:

Wasn’t he discussing the D5 specifically though? If a diesel can’t manage 35 MPG pulling a normal car around, you’ve got to wonder why anyone would buy one.

Basing it on what my 211 was like (200hp Lord gears 3L diesel) you might get mid 20s-30 around town, then mid-40s+ once hot and cruising. A good motorway trip at less-than-r129 speeds was usually about 44mpg, even exercising every opportunity to give it a bit of a squirt. I'd expect the Ovlov to be the same.

That would almost make a trip to Lux in the DB9 self funding. Slight snag with the 20L fuel tank or whatever stupidly small size it is (it might not be small at all it might just use fuel at a prodigious rate)Ben

adaptive cruise is rather appealing
It really is. A bit like being attached a very long towing bar. Easily the feature I'll miss the most if the Lexus goes. A rear view graphic image of the car is displayed on the information screen, and mini brake lights ping on if the car has to haul up thanks to a dawdler. Amuses me every time.

Ive been thinking the same thing recently. My wife's CRV (i-dtec) threw up a DPF fault due to regular short journeys. I took the car over as I travel much further and sold my trusty Civic diesel (c-tdi) to buy her a local runaround. Civic averaged 50mpg, the CR-V? 34.5! Obviously a heavier car but I never thought a difference of that much. Checking on Fuelly other owners are experiencing very similar outputs! If a diesel can’t manage 35 MPG pulling a normal car around, you’ve got to wonder why anyone would buy one.
Shouldve just bought the petrol version - wouldve been cheaper to buy and no DPF. Would also still have my Civic!

Diesel schmiesel, Honda Accord Tourer, 2.4 petrol with all the toys, mid thread, as good economy as a Volvo with none of the DPF/ EGR stuff. Plenty are cheaper, inc the 2.0 with better economy again.

And yes, it looks like a hearse, but a V70 is hardly a Vogue cover model. And no, the rugged looks of the XC are not going to make Martin from Accounts look like an outdoorsy type. It’s an estate.

You should have come here more often and I’d have done my best to dissuade you from buying a diseasel.
PS - if CR-V is permanent 4 x 4, that’ll knock 10% off straight away.
The D5 is the best engine in the V70s & XC70s. Try as I might I couldn't find a petrol Subaru to buy, so stayed with the familiar.PS - if CR-V is permanent 4 x 4, that’ll knock 10% off straight away.
