This is what a car needs inside:
An accelerator pedal
A brake pedal
A parking brake pedal
Seats
Controls to adjust the position of the seats
A steering wheel
A gear selector: P-R-N-D
A speedometer
A tachometer
A fuel gauge
A water temperature gauge
An oil temperature gauge
A light switch that includes an "off" position
A switch to operate the indicators (on or off, not touch and they flash three times)
A switch to operate the wipers (can be the same switch as the indicators)
A headlamp flasher switch (ditto)
A hazard warning light switch
A control for the near side mirror (if fitted)
A rear view mirror (in low power versions)
A button with a '2' on it for Radio 2
A button with a '4' on it for Radio 4
A volume knob for the radio
A temperature selector knob for heater/air conditioner
A rear window de-mister switch
A button for electrocuting the occupants of the rear seats
Handles/latches for opening the doors
A switch for turning the seat heaters on
Switches or crank handles for lowering and raising the windows
An interior light (with switch)
I can't think of anything else. The rest of it is unnecessary ste that never gets used and adds nothing to the sum total of existence.
I'll second this off the great man above. An accelerator pedal

Unfortunately the prices of most cars i was looking at pre covid are at least £1k more expensive.
Guess i'll just keep looking until Macron links to a cheap V12.
For the first, ain't that the truth. Houses, loo roll, skanky E39's are all far more expensive than they were. Maddening.Guess i'll just keep looking until Macron links to a cheap V12.
The second sounds like a thread challenge tbh. I'm sure we can find V12's for 3.5k. I'm just not sure you'd want them, they'd function as an actual vehicle, or both.
Examples, over budget,
CL600, 4650, tat tints and grille aside appears proper VFM

XJS. Shed. 4500. I'm sure ten minutes ago this much cash bought a good one...

£4.5k on an old Jag covered in rust with no MOT, .

Akin, at least in my sick little mind, to the fuss over the BMW grille or to the mild revulsion at your first sight of a vagina.
Given the way some PH’ers behave in some other areas of the forum, I suspect the ones that spend too much time fussing over the former have probably never been near the latter.CharlesdeGaulle said:

A bunch of losers - who aren't the target market, who will never buy a new S Class, who will probably never buy a new car, who are wedded to the past in their choices and tastes, and who will bh to their online chums in their Barge echo chamber with their pathetic budget that represents end-of life value - in might-not-like-the-new-super-saloon-shocker.
MB won't give a flying fk.You lot we are irrelevant. We're not in China, or Asia, or the US. We bottom feeders have no influence on the design of cars at all.
When the 140 S Class was launched there were similar cries of derision, but now we all rather like it; some of our number own them; if nothing else we acknowledge its place in the automotive pantheon.
This will be a marketing triumph and a flagship tour-de-force. As others have said, it may be the last ICE S Class so that alone will give it some cred in hindsight, I betcha.
Do I like it; no not much. Would I buy one; most definitely not. Do I want it; fk yes.
Whilst the above is entirely incontrovertible, it doesn't detract from the fact that the interior shot posted above is utterly, utterly gash.A bunch of losers - who aren't the target market, who will never buy a new S Class, who will probably never buy a new car, who are wedded to the past in their choices and tastes, and who will bh to their online chums in their Barge echo chamber with their pathetic budget that represents end-of life value - in might-not-like-the-new-super-saloon-shocker.

But you're 45 on the inside, right? That's why you're here, no?Happy birthday. I bought my 129 when I was 26. fking idiot. Should have bought a house. At least I've still got the 129: had I bought the house I expect it would have gone in the first divorce.

Can we add seats that inflate the bolsters so you don't have to bother holding yourself in place as you go round corners? I'd swap headlights for that I think. An accelerator pedal

Is the German TUV standard higher than our MOT too therefore giving you a buyer additional reassurance?

This is the interior of the latest Merc trucks, yes that is your mirror linked to a external camera doesn't inspire me but my mate loves his, I worry about the picture freezing
Off topic I guess: I think some of the tech on trucks now actually does make sense considering the near constant up-time on the road, safety concerns and overall comfort for the driver. I watched a review on YouTube of the latest Mercedes Actros and it looked amazing. If I had that as my office every day I’d be pretty chuffed.
Interested in your thoughts though Ian as I believe you drive an artic daily.
Re the new S-Class - ghastly. Interior especially. I think this will look as silly in not too distant future as those Aston Martin Lagonda’s from the 70/80s do. I would accept the point however that it’ll be the last of the ICE breed and for that it has at least one redeeming feature.
Currently drooling over these E38s: both for sale for around the equivalent of 3.5-4k GBP - they're rather unloved here. I'd have one in a moment if I didn't have to drive on such terrible roads (which is probably why most people don't want them).

740i LWB - would look great without the red calipers and rear window spoiler. The rear seat options are great too.

Mercedes could never offer to the market an S class with a dash that appealed to the "hairshirt" brigade and expect anyone to buy it these days.
I will never be able to afford a new one and the thought of all the electronics in 10yrs time will ensure that a secondhand one is out of the question aswell.(that and my advanced years lol"
Agree with 129 on the LC500 though.

^^^ Very much this.Although ... my S class turns 18 this year and is about the most complicated you would want for running a barge-on-a-budget - probably 5% capital cost i.e. it lost 95% of its original cost price when I bought it 54 months ago and it is costly enough, but not bankrupting, to keep it going - but the telephone and TV system are obsolete ..... just think what might be obsolete on that new one in 15 years!?
Of course, next generation won't have ICE, but will (we assume) be self-driving.
The generation after that presumably won't have any capability to be "driven" at all in the sense we know today
And it'll only be grumpy old men that have a problem with that
