I changed cars recently and was told this by the supplying dealer, so expected to see my part-exchange up for resale quickly - of course I've been nosey and checked their website (Lookers) frequently as well as AT and PH to see what they put it up for.

10 weeks down the line and I've not seen it anywhere, and it's showing as untaxed - I know there is no way of knowing but if dealers are struggling for stock why wouldn't it be retailed?

A 4yr old Merc CLS with FMBSH in great condition in resale silver - would have thought if struggling for stock the dealer (Audi) would have put it up as they were selling other PX-ed Mercs, BMWs etc, or shipped it off to one of Lookers MB franchises.
Sold without advertising, straight onto a private plate then taxed?

Probably went onto Lookers internal system where salesmen can quickly reserve it for someone who’s on their wait list for that particular car.

I’ve done similar with a salesman to keep a look out for a particular car in a particular colour and spec. I’ve also noticed used stuff appearing on manufacturers websites without photos or much of a description and being sold in very short order. Stuff really is flying off the shelves at the moment.

If it shows on DVLA as untaxed it has not changed plate. If it was low miles it may have gone off to the Mercedes franchise, I could understand it taking a few weeks to get moved, prepared for sale and advertised but 8 weeks is a long time in the current market.

If it was a petrol it might have gone to auction or straight to an exporter and left the country (inc Ireland). It is then non uncommon for the export marker to not get updated.

That's what I thought re still showing on DVLA as untaxed.

Part-exed 10 weeks today - diesel, low 40k miles. My salesman seemed to think they'd retail it at Audi as they'd been selling similar for the last 18mths due to stock shortages.

I'm just being nosy of course, keen to see what it eventually goes up for!

i went to see a car a couple of weeks ago which was on sale for £24,800. i said i was keen on it and would come back the following week for a test drive. When i got back home the price had increased to £25,300. The salesman told me that the dealership had put all prices up by 2% and there was no room to negotiate. I told him i would think about it, smug in the knowledge that he would be phoning me back.

A week later the price had increased to £25,800. it is no longer being advertised on AT so I assume it's been sold......
Car sales man here. I listed a car I sell loads of an E Class saloon 18 reg. Had a really good spec. I know the pricing for these with my eyes closed or so I think.
Put it on at £24k. The phone absolutely melts. I've got it wrong and its flagging up Autotrader low priced, It ended up selling for £25500 when I adjusted the price 24 hours later. Paid £20k for it. Still had people wanting money off at the 24k.

For a fact the same car same spec was selling in January at around £21500/22k.

Perhaps dealers are holding back stock as the prices are going up.
Inflation on supposedly depreciating assets must be have the FDs frothing at the mouth.

I very much doubt that, stock will be on a stocking plan attracting interest. You want to turn your stock over as quickly as possible to reduce charges and bring profit in through the doors.

I've noticed BMW dealers selling non-BMW part exchanges when premium dealers have previously only sold franchise marques. Are dealers increasingly doing this just to maintain stock levels?

I was interested in a Skoda Superb so started talking figures with the salesman. There was some movement on the price however their interest rates were much higher than a personal loan. When it came to negotiating, the salesman told me that they would only be able to budge on the price if I took the finance they were offering.

Is this because they get a bonus from the finance company? Seems daft when I was pretty keen on the car and there was a deal to be done but I wasn't prepared to pay over the odds on their finance when a loan was much cheaper.

Take the dealer finance. Accept the better deal on the sticker price on that basis. Pay off the dealer finance with the exorbitant rate immediately following completion of the sale, thereby incurring no interest charges, if necessary using the much cheaper personal loan you were going to take out anyway.

An Aston Martin dealer took a nearly new Suzuki Jimny in against a Vanquish S, and then…put it on their forecourt and sold at £8k over what the car was when new!!

That must be one of the most unusual PXs they have had.

I valued a Jimmy earlier this week for a customer, had to double check the reg when the price came up. Like your example, trade underwrite was over £6k more than list.

Just to update. I cancelled the finance within 14 days which prompted an email to the dealer resulting in a lot of phone calls to me.

I now owed them an extra £250 (taking the finance got another £250 off) as they were not going to get that back from the finance company due to me cancelling it.

Seems they do sometimes claw it back.

have they asked for it? Or do you owe it? It could be two different things, one contractual one not.

They said it was a dealer contribution and they would have got it back from the finance company had I not cancelled if.

As I had cancelled it they were now £250 short on the car.

My car was in for warranty work at the time so they had the keys and car at that point as well.

Were they not going to give you your car back then?

I'd call the FCA for advice on this, doesn't sound right to me.

They didn’t say that but what would they have done had I said no?

Said that’s ok and your car is ready to collect, see you again soon?

I can't believe dealers are still doing it.

A Merc is on my radar. I'm at the stage where all I wanted was a sit in one to get the feel (last time I changed I didn't like the CLS due to offset steering wheel, and the E Class dash looked horrid).

In I walked. Met by receptionist to whom I explained I wanted to have a look at two particular models (one of which I saw outside). She looked at me and replied that all of sales were busy with customers. I looked over to count six sales people at their desks but only one of them with a customer and I didn't spot any of the others on the phone.

She asked me to call and someone could go through a configuration with me. I explained I wasn't at the point yet but simply wanted to sit in two models to get a feel for it. Again I was told to call and make an appointment. I thanked her for her time and left.

Message to this particular MB dealer. Sometimes a bloke that walks in wearing casual shorts, t-shirt and flip flops can actually afford a Merc.

You'll never know now that you've paid them.
