Yup. Valeters should be in house and a valued part of the team, you're screwed without them! Find a couple of decent ones and never let them leave smile
I haven't seen the TV programme in question but I had a 6 month spell as a valeter at a Ford dealer after finishing college and not knowing what to do with myself. I was working for an agency who were awful, from memory I think I earned about £250 a week and had to sort my own tax & NI. I really liked the job and people I worked with so tried to get them to take me in house but it never happened and I left. Sadly they are seen as bottom of the food chain and disposable.

Was shown through the valeters yard to where wife's new Tiguan was being stored. There was a bunch of cars in various stages of being cleaned all sitting on idle for what I'm sure must have been extended periods, and one with its radio on at speaker busting volumes. Hefty valeter was standing in the door opening of a car to clean its roof.

I ask them not to wash our car. They forget and wash it anyway. They partially pulled one of the side bumpers off and kicked out one of the lower door covers (I guess the mechanic could have done that).

Bottom of the food chain but the ones that set a good impression the minute the customer see's their shiny new - or used car. Its odd isn't it that something that gives a lasting impression is thought so little of.

Which is why you keep hold of the decent ones at all costs! We had one at Vauxhall years ago that was amazing, he had an airline fitted so he could blow the water out of the nooks and crannies, could wheel a mop like nobody else and mixed a couple of different polishes and waxes together for better results. He could turn the most awful looking thing in to something to be proud of. He really could polish a turd laugh

Wow, that really isn't the kind of description that would convince me to have a closer look. Infact it would do the polar opposite, and make me think which patronising idiot wrote this. Witnessing some the videos 'van man Lee' was making for Bristol Street Motors, it baffled me even more that sales were through the roof. (featured on the big boss, for those who are confused). Well what do I know.....

They need to change this bit of text..

""they all come complete with a free HPI check for total peace of mind knowing we have thoroughly researched our vehicles history for correct mileages, previous accidents and any outstanding finance.""

So all their cars are checked for previous accidents?

A repainted bumper could be classed as an accident.

I can't believe an experienced sales manager would leave them wide open like that.

Seriously, that is the sort of parody advert I would expect to see on Sniff Petrol. Good to see the Swiss Toni stereotype sales person is alive and well.

What a cringeworthy way of describing a hugely overrated and disappointing car.

It doesn't say they reject the ones that have had accidents.
Just that they've checked for them.

CAP excellent is £23k

All diamond cut wheels suffering aluminium oxidation
Fair price??
Main dealer.
All tyres above 4mm
Front axle is mismatched.

Regardless of anything else, if CAP excellent value is only £23k and your friend buys at £28k, they could be looking at some pretty hefty depreciation, particularly if the market calms down a bit once new car supply gets back to normal levels. Even more so given from your description this particular example sounds not so 'excellent' !

What's the car out of interest?

Sure there are some Jeremy Clarkson lines in there. Besides that, if it was such a great car it would be Jaguar Approved Used at a Farnell site.

How does the price compare to others?
Presumably it’s on Autotrader, what’s the price indicator say?

(It’s also probably worth pointing out that if the dealer has bought it from auction themselves, they will have paid in excess of CAP clean for it)

Question for the dealers:

Prices are up - great!
Supply is down - bad!

How is this balancing out at the bottom line? Is this a good time or a bad time for your business?
