It is to be hoped that a customer does not want a full tank of fuel with their Cazoo purchase as that would wipe out any profit.

I sold my car to Cazoo at the weekend. It was a very simple process and I'd happily recommend it/do it again.

I dropped it off at one of their Customer Service Centres was was very like a car showroom, but without any cars on sale to view. In an out in less than 20 minutes, with cash in the bank instantly. We could have been done quicker that that really, the 2 guys in the showroom seemed to appreciate having a chat - I got the impression they hadn't seen many other customers on Sunday. They are now offering servicing from these locations to drive some revenue but their costs must be little different to any other dealership which seems to be the antithesis of the do it cheaper online model.

I suspect they'll retail my car and it'll be interesting to see how quick they turn it around, and how much they have across it. They paid decent money for it, £1500 more than WBAC and £2000 more than a Mercedes dealer was willing to pay.

My overall impression is they burning investor cash experimenting to try and find a model that works.

What do similar cars to yours, retail for and how does that stack up with what they gave you for yours?

We go on 100% of test drives with our customers as our insurance doesnt allow them on there own.

I actually quite like going with them, always tend to have a laugh and joke and happy to answer any questions they may have,

We can do longer drives 30 mins plus if requested but i think we have maybe done 2 of those this year, We are finding lots of people are actually buying cars without test drives these days, maybe 30% ish
I'm still peeved that a VW Manchester salesman said no to a VW Polo GTI test drive until he had seen evidence I could afford the car as it is a 'performance car'.

(His words).

Next time I won't turn up in Birkenstock sandals and unshaven. Maybe it's that!

Cue the story of a millionaire who turned up dressed as a tramp, got refused a test drive, went to Lamborghini and then did burn outs in his Lambo outside the Ferrari showroom.

What counts as evidence though? Do you have to show them your bank account or payslips?

In reality it would require consideration of your income vs expenditure and how careful you are with your spending generally. How much does the salesman need to know just to grant a test drive?

He asked me to apply for finance or the initial part. I'd called the dealer principal afterwards, no call back.

I then contacted the group via email. No response.

Bizarre but maybe Inchcape work differently to other dealerships?

This is pistonheads, surely he could tell that the beater watch you were giving wrist time to that day was worth more than his annual salary?

Surprised you didn't just show him the six figure balance from your online slush fund, walk out, buy one from the dealer across the street for cash and come back and do a big burnout across the car park.

I assume you were buying it for the nanny as a runabout?

No! But I did point out the numerous pin dimple dents in the bonnet and ask if they'd be rectified pre sale and he couldn't see them/it comes like this/won't be. So I didn't comeback for it in any sense post that.

Still I'm happy with my 595 Competizione smile

If this was recently then maybe if you didn't want/need finance then they didn't want you as a customer. Limited availability of cars at the moment, so sell what you do have to those you can make the highest overall margin from.

After your theatrical flounce out of the showroom did you buy from another VW dealer or did you buy something else?

I think they lost £550M with 20k of sales last year.
That's over £25k loss per car, I don't think they are that worried about their fuel bills at this stage.

Years ago I called up in advance and booked a test drive of a Clio Williams at a local dealer. When I got there the wide boy said that I couldn't have a test drive until I placed an order. Ferk that. So I went and bought from another dealer. I took it back to wide boys showroom for warranty work and wide boy was offended and thought that one of his colleagues had skanked him on a sale and went off scowling at his colleagues. biggrin

Contrast that to a really nice family car dealer (St.Michaels in Sittingbourne) when I was after an E class estate: "Here are the keys, come back when you're happy, we close at 5.."

We don't do any accompanied test drives, new or used. We haven't done since the beginning of covid and have no plans to reintroduce them.

So you just walked in, asked for a test drive and drove off for an hour?

A likely story, they didn't know you, check your driving licence or verify who you were, it never happened.
