Surely a G30 330i M Sport Plus Edition at circa £37k (after discount) which is RWD, has an LSD and Adaptive Dampers as standard is better value and likely a superior driving experience. Same 4 cylinder washing machine type engine though.
Or for c. £37k you could get a 3-year-old Giulia Quadrifoglio... Or... Or...neverlifted said:

Yep maybe if you wanted a totally different type of car. And don't call me Shirley !!NGK210 said:
Chassis and aero spec very promising: a hot hatch with a pointy front-end and a generally engaging chassis that’s also a comfy motorway cruiser. Yes please![
Your post had me nodding continuously! Also not sold on the Mk8 styling. But after 2 years in a 7.5, the chassis / handling bits is where I think is some genuine room for improvement. Also first article that confirms VAQ is still available. Good! So far, I'm skipping the Mk8 though. Probably going to look at one in a couple of years though. Really hope it is a success so there is a good used supply. FWIW, this will likely be the last petrol Golf GTI available in the UK....

The entire point of climate is that you don't need to change it other than quick demist, which has its own separate physical button anyway as it's a safety feature.
Think this is a good point -- but it's also nice to change the temp with a quick twist of a physical dial. On the Mk7.5 they've already gone a bit too far, e.g. dash illumination is hidden in a touch screen menu. The whole screen stuff looks fancy and modern, but the main driver is likely cost -- must be by far the cheapest way to do it by now. So there's a big motivation to remove as much parts from the interior as possible. But no matter how good your UI designers are, there are limits too how much content can be taken out. Which in the end means we'll likely end up with even more screens + voice control on cheaper cars.

I wonder, would the Mk8’s springs, dampers, ARBs and bushes be interchangeable on a Mk7.5? After all, they share the same MQB platform. You know what I really like my MK 7.5 GTI, it might not be the quickest hot hatch off the line or have the most razor sharp handling but its a brilliant every day car to drive. I upgraded from a MK5 GTI so you could say I have the 'bug'.
With regards to the MK8 I think I'd have to see a couple of them in various colours and have a proper test drive before making my mind up.
Those seats though........ they do look fab

This thread just shows what a subjective and personal thing car choice is, even between hot hatches.
I’m sure you need to drive it to form a final view, but to me this looks bland, less powerful than half the previous generation of hot-hatches, less involving (given the lack of a manual), too dependent on touch screen controls and potentially over-priced compared to more exotic nearly new candidates.
And yet, I’m sure it will sell well and be loved by many.

I agree, although I love the way the GTI badge has been centralised below the VW badge. They also seem to not have the "Golf" badge on the rear.

Those seats/headrests need something written on them. They look strangely bare.
The car itself will, as ever, not be as flash as the competition but will outsell them all.

Personally I think the mk8 Clubsport version that was mentioned yesterday looks sensational. I was always a massive renaultsport / BMW M fan but now owning two VAG cars, three if you include the wife’s polo I totally get the love for these cars. So much is interchangeable and can be adapted / modified to suit. Proper fallen for VAG stuff I have. Even put a note of interest to the dealer for the Clubsport as a replacement for the VRS.
4WD and a bit more power = Golf R

Love it. I much prefer the wolf(ish) in sheep(ish)’s clothing approach. I’m far too old to carry off the Civic R or Meganne RS without looking desperate.
Pistonheads comments are like an inverse barometer of sales success (Please note I said sales success). Look at this and the Yaris GR? 80% love for Yaris. 80% hate for golf. Let’s see the sales figures for both in 18 months time.
Now if Volkswagen would just add 4wd and a bit more power...
