To say I like this is an over-statement, but it's certainly not bad.

Perhaps my e46 325i being a similar colour (aside from the dash top) has ruined my judgement

Why would you subject yourself to 11 years of something that grim? Could always, you know, buy another car?
True! I've moved away from BMW now in fairness though. I did get a little bit too brand loyal with them(had 7 of them).

I've always liked the way that a BMW drives, but they can't do interiors for toffee for me though.
I actually have to disagree. BMW interiors from that era are ergonomically superb. I still own a 2005 E90 330i manual and a 2007 E86 Z4 3.0si and every single switch and control is instantly accessible without needing to look, and all analogue - no horrid touchscreen things in sight. Lovely. Reminds me of aircraft cockpit design - function over form.

I knew it wouldn't take long before someone used that word to describe it, Minimalist is not the same thing as underdesigned with little actual thought put in. The screen looks exactly like it was attached as an afterthought using a generic bracket from Halfords, and the plastics have a finish in them that shouts 'recycled household waste'.

Honest minimalism is Dacia.

One look at that interior is enough to bore anyone to tears.

I'll concur, considering I sat looking at that exact dash layout for the best part of 5 years. The nav equipped versions were worse IMO because of the 'double-bubble' dashtop profile.

Also it did not help that much of it was covered in that dreadful rubberised paint that turned to goo (especially the door grabs) and the aluminium trims on the door cards were positioned exactly where the seatbelt buckle would collide with them when reeling back, leaving the interior of the door looking like a pock-marked mess.

Oh, and the silver trim on the gearknob would peel off from the front edge leaving a very sharp and scratch edge on the plastic.
I've had a combined 11 years(across 3 of them) sat in a E9x 3 series. It is a grim place to sit for sure, the saving grace was that at least they drive well though. I really liked the sport seats(held me in well) and the steering(all of them hydraulic).
I actually like the E9x interior and think it’s aged well without screens etc. It was very plain and simple but I like it...especially at night. I found soft orange glow soothing on long night time drives. I love BMW sports seats and can always get really comfy and their general ergonomics fit me.

The screens on modern cars will age horribly. My 65 plate vRS and the standard small screen and it looked st by the time it went back last year; small, crappy graphics etc.

Agreed I think it’s bloody awful, not even an HUD for vehicle speed directly in front of the driver seems a bid daft (even the fanboy I know with one moans about this). The seat covering feels massively cheap and thin (and that’s coming from someone who has BMW’s Dakota leather to enjoy every day).
Tesla is truly hideous.
It looks like a french peasant's car which someone has slapped their TV in to liven it up a bit.

What's worse is it looks like that they think the interior of a car doesn't matter, and that's worse - total ambivalence.

I have no picture but minimalist interior? Mk1 fiat panda. I loved mine. 750l flat out at about 85 honest mph, proper minimalist design throughout

It does just show how we all see things differently for sure. The only BMW interior that I thought was worse than the E9x's...was my Z4M's interior! I just find their interiors so bland to look at and sit in. Very functional though I agree. thumbup

The Mk1 Panda's interior is more interesting and goes with the price of the car well.

Tesla not only take the award for worst looking interior or must also rank as one of the worst for quality materials.

Awful.

It is just the blandness that grates for me. I just don't find them very interesting to look at. Whereas some absolutely hate the interior in a Mini, yet I really like the interior in the F56 Mini because I find it interesting to look at and sit in.

I also like the interior in the Mercedes GLC(apart from the stuck on nav), but the majority seem to find them too fussy and over done.

Thanks. Proper minimalist, always made me realise what wasn't there was more important than what was.

Edit im sure that's slightly posher than the 750. Mine had kinda hessian hammock style seats and the back seat could actually be hung as a hammock style gizmo.

I'm interested that people point to that Panda (and also suggest Dacia) as examples of minimalist design. I don't think minimal specification and minimalist design are the same thing, and both the Panda and Sandero interiors have lots of unnecessary design elements despite their spartan spec lists.

Anything current by MB looks like Granny Doris' cluttered living room. It's the antiTesla school of design.

This is true. If we all liked the same things we'd all be driving the same cars! smile

Had an E90 Alpina D3 and I'd agree that the interior is about as uplifting as a wet weekend in Frankfurt. Truly depressing!

That looks like a gamer PC with a steering wheel attached to it.

Someone will be along shortly no doubt to say that the young, trendy demographic is what MB are aiming at and us oldies don't get it, but obsessive PC gamers who dress their computer cases up with LED displays, fans and neons are not cool - they are nerds.
