I didn't think that could be a number plate. Someone will be along shortly to say it was issued in 1855 to a Peugeot Bicycle.
According to the bible*, single-character prefix 'F' was allocated to Essex from 1st Jan 1904 in the initial area allocations following registration plates being introduced (pages 16, 62, 67 and 102) with F1263 being the first issue of 1905.

'Reverse', suffix single-character 'F' plates were issued by Essex from February 1957 (as a response to levels of demand / prefix number options running out, I think) (page 23 and 103) and the overlaps of letter combinations issued in the table on p103 suggests 'F' plates ran out quite quickly - so it was probably a 1957 issue.

On a related note, Essex County Council had both F1 and 1F before they flogged all the family silver 'because budget pressures'.

A shame, as it was not like they were originally or recently costly to purchase or maintain, but budget pressures always seem to mean authorities selling everything and screw any history or long-term thinking.

They now have ECC 1 on the leader of the council's vehicle IIRC, which I guess is a decent substitute.

Mrs JS worked in County Hall and had a ringside seat when the plates were sold The back story is the funds raised from the sale were meant to go towards a road saftey campaign aimed at younger drivers which to the best of my knowledge never actually happened but a brand new XJ adorned with ECC 1 did appear almost indecently soon after the sale.

The morality of Council officials pleading poverty and cutting public services to the bone whilst swanning around in chauffeur driven Jaguars with vanity plates at the taxpayers expense is doubtless beyond the scope of this thread.

I can't honestly remember when I first became aware that there was a term given to an interest in registration numbers, even less so that people wrote about the subject.

I've wanted to cover the subject of Books and Magazines for a while but simply keeping the site updated takes up enough time, but finally I have a Books & Magazines section.biggrin

Enjoy the read. I certainly did.

To come back to this again, was it definitely that number?

Because 8536 F is for sale and that has the same numbers but in a different order... lol

That's been listed for literally years. I see their asking price has gone up with inflation! I seem to remember it at the lower 8 digit mark

The plate resellers are all chancers - they list plates that aren’t even for sale.

Belongs to Afzal Khan as does 4 K. Afzal normally sells his own plates so I doubt he's even aware of that company.

ETA: 4 K is listed on Khans website for 750k and F 1 is listed as POA
