On a related note, Essex County Council had both F1 and 1F before they flogged all the family silver 'because budget pressures'.

A shame, as it was not like they were originally or recently costly to purchase or maintain, but budget pressures always seem to mean authorities selling everything and screw any history or long-term thinking.

They now have ECC 1 on the leader of the council's vehicle IIRC, which I guess is a decent substitute.
And vanity plates belonging to public funded offices benefits the public how, precisely?

Both F1 and 1F would have been allocated by the local issuing office for a cost of what would have been mere moments of an officer's time, presuming that all such things took 'back in the day' was to write 'Essex Council' in the box next to them in the issuing list, so I am struggling to see why a council continuing to own them is a problem - whether or not they are considered as assets potentially available for sale at the right money at some point.

One could extend what appears to be the thrust of the argument being made against such things, to query why authorities need offices and premises with any form of unnecessary decorative addition over and above a portacabin with magnolia walls and grey carpet tiles, or why those premises need to be based in local towns and cities, where land costs and property prices will be higher, even though original purchase and construction costs have long since been written off.

Why do all councils not sell off every building they own, including historic 'fancy' premises like Guildhalls and so on? Or why not sell off any buildings that were erected historically using private donations?

After all, any donating parties are long dead now and councils don't need to have buildings in town centres. Staff could all work from home, or staff that need to be in an office in person could be based in unadorned, basic, minimally furnished and heated, minimal-rental cost warehouses in cheap, probably otherwise undesirable locations outside of urban areas.

Any necessary points of face-to-face contact with the public could be dealt with by a single small rented room in the cheapest building available, either on the industrial estate where the aforementioned warehouse was sited or, pushing the boat out, perhaps in the cheapest town centre office rental space available.

But it was in a Loading Only bay, badly parked and with some random, badly-spaced font instead of the proper font... tongue out

I can't honestly remember when I first became aware that there was a term given to an interest in registration numbers, even less so that people wrote about the subject.

I've wanted to cover the subject of Books and Magazines for a while but simply keeping the site updated takes up enough time, but finally I have a Books & Magazines section.biggrin

Enjoy the read. I certainly did.

Incredible research there, thanks for posting everything!
Thanks.

The book you referred to earlier is one I'm after, but not easy to obtain at sensible money.

I didn't think that could be a number plate. Someone will be along shortly to say it was issued in 1855 to a Peugeot Bicycle.
To come back to this again, was it definitely that number?

Because 8536 F is for sale and that has the same numbers but in a different order... lol

That's actually sensible money for a wrong way round single letter original issue

Belongs to Afzal Khan as does 4 K. Afzal normally sells his own plates so I doubt he's even aware of that company.

ETA: 4 K is listed on Khans website for 750k and F 1 is listed as POA
He also owns 1 K

Really??

I am surprised, I am sure I got my copy for very reasonable money off one of the usual options.

Not that it helps at all, but it is very detailed ad useful indeed! lol

Hope you can find a copy!

EDIT: Twenty quid was the sales price on this recent listing https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334700880974 by the seller bigmandoge https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/bigmandoge

Could be worth a message to see if there is another one laying around?

4x1 single letter plates are all over the shop WRT pricing - I guess it's a sellers market etc. etc. but there seems no rhyme nor reason why certain random and not 'attractive' combinations of numbers are worth 2x or 3x more than others.
