Was pondering this last night with the mention of bikes.

Aside from mopeds and other sub motorbikes, are there any big bikes with auto gearboxes ?

I quite like my Trek Road bike as its sequential manual, its just that the engine, though quite large doesn't have a massive power output and the emissions arent great biggrin

We go on about interaction on here, try a road bike, dont get much more interactive than that, steering is pretty direct.
Lol

The popular auto on larger capacity machines is the Honda NC750

A truly sad day when someone posts on an enthusiasts motororing forum they have absolutely no interest in driving.

I love driving but equally I'd love being able to get into a self driving vehicle for mundane stuff. The two things aren't mutually exclusive.

What's mundane? I enjoy going to the supermarket - 30mph and 40mph zones with a few roundabouts and I am a happy man. I don't equate doing everyday tasks with boring driving.

Hell, yesterday I did a week's shopping for 4 people in an aeroscreened and caged Caterham. And it was bloody brilliant smile

Thats more like it.

You don't have to be 'on it' to experience the joys of a performance car.

The sense of occasion is key.

Amazed you fitted 4 people and all that shopping in smile

Every time I drive I enjoy it irrespective of what I am driving and why I am driving.

I even enjoy driving a Renault Scenic,..................there I have said it.

It’s the same difference, and the current technology would likely try and kill you otherwisesmile

But no, a trip to the shops can be fun, depends on how you feel, not just what the car is. The greatest crime of all is not enjoying whatever time we all have. There’s not many vehicles I can think of that didn’t have at least one thing that made me smile.

Can't fit 4 people in a Seven unfortunately
Can get 3 in though - you can strap one to the roll cage. You need the full cage and some decent ties.

Won't work on a standard trackday roll bar.

Agreed. In prepping for a banger rally I have six sheds all under £400 and they're all brilliant in their own way. laugh

I don't mind taking a taxi but it's not really what I had in mind. A taxi means sharing someone else's vehicle with someone else. It's also a very expensive way to travel, particularly for longer journeys and you are at the mercy of someone else's timing and driving standards. It's not quite the same.

An example of what I meant by a mundane journey that I make frequently. North East to West Midlands. 200 mile, 95% of it busy dual carriageway or motorway.. I don't take any pleasure from that and would quite happily let a machine take over.

I didn't really think about going to the shops. I think someone else brought that up. I hardly ever do that in all honesty. But a closer example might be occasional work trips through city traffic. Again, it's great if others enjoy that, but it's not really what floats my boat in driving terms.

But if I'm going over to the Lakes or up into Scotland, it's nearly all great A roads from here and I'm driving every time!

Yep. Fun can be had in every car if you look for it.

Plenty on here seem to equate "dull" journeys with dull cars. The wife has a Nissan Note Auto on all season tyres. I quite enjoy a bit of LFB around a roundabout in a 40 mph zone and getting a bit of angle.

Talk of driverless cars and the likes from supposed enthusiasts is a very sad state of affairs.

A sad state of affairs sounds a little dramatic! I once caught a train too and even quite enjoyed it.

Admitting to not enjoying driving every minute of every type of journey in every type of vehicle doesn't really sound like headline news to me. If you think that makes me a charlatan to these hallowed pages then so be it, I'll live.

Yes but "fun" can't generally be had on most long motorway journeys - leastways not at vaguely legal speeds. The M25 and fun are pretty much incompatible.

True but if you're intersted you can always find a more interesting route trouble is folks these days rely too much on sat nav and the quuckest route and not enough on looking at a map to work out the best and much preferred interesting route.

I 've had to travel from North Manchester to South of Birmingham several times in the last few months. M6 or across Peak District and Derbyshire dales?

Ok across Derbyshire is possibly slower than the brain dead and tedious M6 but far more interesting with several opportunities for proper driving too. No contest and if need be just leave a bit earlier.

Most people looked for the quickest route before satnavs so nothing has changed there.

For the avoidance of doubt, I mentioned them facetiously in the context of automatics. There are already autonomous cars which will lap faster than most people - so that’s gotta be better, right, if it’s faster....
