Own a drivers car but no interest in cars!

The GTI wasn't the best drivers car even when it came out it lost out to the Megane & ST at the time but beat them as an overall package, as you say the reason people raved about the MK5 was because the MK3/4 were so st.
Mk2 ST felt a lot heavier, esp. around the nose, where it WOULD understeer more than the Mk5.ST slightly quicker with a (clearly) more characterful engine, but the Mk5's chassis (IMHO) was better and more rounded.
Never drove that gen Megane...should have had a look at an R26R before they became £££.
People buy what they like, and use it how they like? How many own big old 4x4 yet have no interest in off roading? Same kind of argument. The more people who buy well specced top range cars the better for us at the impecunious end of the market, depreciation being the great leveller and all that.
My mother who is 65 owns a TT with the 2.0TFSI engine. She drives it about as fast as she ever drover her previous car, a kia VENGA, IE - not very fast. She just liked the look of it on the forecourt and fancied a sports car.
She is a bit dimented like that, and then moans about the mpg on the thing.

Christ this thread has turned into a bit of a bore. What actually defines a "drivers car"? Surely it's subjective?
If you've spent your life driving around in base spec Micra's and Corsa's then a Mk5 Golf GTI is going to feel very much like a drivers car. Whereas if you're used to Boxsters or M3's then it will feel pretty mundane.
And what about the MX5? Widely regarded on here as one of the best drivers cars, yet at the same time lots of people joke they are a hairdressers car

I don't think anyone here refers to the MX5 as one of the best drivers cars, aside from MX5 owners. Chris Harris did a good video. While I agree on your point about being a good drivers car is a subjective opinion, it can't ONLY be formed on objective opinion because like you say if you've only driven a Fiesta and then have a go in, for example, an Audi RS4 you're going to think it's amazing even if compared to other cars in its class, the RS4 might not be the best (of course, I don't know if it is, just an example).

This always strikes me as a bit odd.
My friend has a very clean and well cared for 2007 Mk5 Golf GTI 5 door.
She has no interest in cars. She does only a few thousand miles a year preferring to walk or use her push bike.
The car was bought because VW’s are reliable and it was a ‘nice colour’ .
Long-standing neighbours of my parents bought a nearly new car a few years ago. The wife wanted a hatchback in a strong colour with all wheel drive (they're rural...) She quite liked Golfs. My friend has a very clean and well cared for 2007 Mk5 Golf GTI 5 door.

The only car that ticked all the boxes that she could find was a MK7 Golf R, so she bought it, not really knowing what it was capable of. The husband was officially "surprised" when she discovered it was a little rocket

This might come as a shock to the OP but most likely the majority of people buying new sports car are not really enthusiasts. They are just rich enough to afford them.
Hence the prevalence of AWD and automatic gearboxes in performance cars.CrippsCorner said:
There's someone at my work who has a leased M4 without any real interest in cars - The reason she says she went for that particular model, is because it looks good on the drive! Nice way of spunking £600 p/m I guess
Yup its all about the maxxing the mumflies whilst simultaneously trying to convince yourself in vain you are impressing the neighbours. The mind truly boggles but presumably shallow Cheryl is happy in her little bubble. :

I am not sure if it's intentional but it sounds like you're taking the moral high-ground. If she likes the car and is happy with the cost, what's the issue? The mind truly boggles but presumably shallow Cheryl is happy in her little bubble. :

That is the sort of thing that bemuses me. I like cars and I would probably notice (although I wouldn't give it a second look) that it was an M4, but I doubt that many notice or care that is an M4 rather than a 318/20.She could save half of that and pay off the mortgage, but what do I know?

Maybe she doesn't have a mortgage? Jeez - some people really think they know best. She could save half of that and pay off the mortgage, but what do I know?
