Sorry, strugling to follow - what point are you making?
There is a difference between suggesting an alternative and declaring that something should not be allowed.

If somebody wishes to spend a large amount of money on what amounts to a garden ornament on wheels, that's fine.

There's nothing stopping her and nor should it.

I've always found dismissing people who want "something that looks good on the drive" to be rather odd. Not really any different to replacing tired front doors and windows, or keeping the grass tidy.

Yeah and how on earth do any of these people that the owner doesn't like the noise, different styling or giving it a right big load of welly down a slip road?! Strange.

Exactly what I thought. Not a driver’s car at all. Presumably just what was within her monthly PCP budget like the other sheep.
A 13 year old GTI? On PCP?

There's a sheep here alright, but it isn't the OP's friend.

If it was a caterham, noble, lotus, or even a megane RS TR I'd understand, but a golf GTI is pretty standard hatchback in just about every sense.

Most people don't buy a car for how well it drives, and practically nobody makes full use of potential. Can't make a thread for every supercar, 911, GT86, or MX5 that was bought just cos they liked how it looked but just sits there or pootles round town.

Yup its all about the maxxing the mumflies whilst simultaneously trying to convince yourself in vain you are impressing the neighbours.

The mind truly boggles but presumably shallow Cheryl is happy in her little bubble. biggrin:
I am not sure if it's intentional but it sounds like you're taking the moral high-ground. If she likes the car and is happy with the cost, what's the issue?
There isn't one but quite clearly anyone who maxxes out the mumflies on a pcpd car for no other reason than in a vain attempt to SOLELY impress the neighbours has an issue.

There is no issue if it keeps them happy.

Last year I dated a recently divorced woman who was driving an Audi S7. She knew what it was, however, had no interest in driving it and when I broached it with her, said it was far too large and she preferred her former Golf. When I asked her why she bought it she told me she only had it because it was her ex-husband's pride and joy and that she could. I soon got binned off by that one!

My great uncle was one of these people who just wander into the dealership and ask for "the best one". It saw him in a W140 S600, and in his later years a Supercharged X308 Daimler.

Never, ever, above 50mph and almost none of the features ever used. It was the best one, though. I suspect this also stemmed from his company car years.

My mother in law used to have a Clio 172 (about 15 years ago this is!), it never went over 3000rpm in her hands. She swapped it for a diesel Corsa.

The Golf GTi though is a car that is everything to everyone. It'll pootle about like a diesel Golf and a little old lady wouldn't know the difference. There's no real compromise in owning one over a normal Golf, other than mpg a bit lower I guess. It's not like an Integra Type R, Exige or Caterham; it's like owning a 330i M Sport surely? Everyone from grandads to boy racers own them. Same with the Golf.

Yep, and the Golf GTI has filled that sort of role in the UK for, oh, about 40 YEARS??!! biggrin

It is not news. The UK market likes high-spec cars much more than most other markets. So people owning Golf GTIs etc who have no interest in cars is not remotely unusual.

Slight digression but my best mate works on an F1 team and hates the sport. It's just a (well paid) job.

This. I’d wager the majority of Ferrari’s, 911s etc are not enthusiast owned. Just pretty and expensive and fit in with lifestyle and why not.
Any evidence to support your dreamt up theory?

Thought not. rolleyes

My Brother in law has absolutely no interest in cars but spent £186000 on a brand new and blinged up Ferrari California. As he lives in Kensington and has no garage he ended up paying to keep it in a local hotel car park. He isn't a very confident driver and has a chauffeur and S class for daily journeys so the thing very rarely got used and was sold after about 18 months which must have cost him dearly (thought he is rich enough to not notice).

I did however get to drive it once around Kensington on a Sunday which was fun but it was hard to even get out of second gear or even begin to stretch its legs. I wish he had driven it out to my corner of Sussex for a proper hoon or a Goodwood breakfast club meet or something but somehow we never managed that.

He also has one of those Maybach 4x4 things in London (hideous) and a top end Range Rover (lovely) at his villa in Majorca

The Ferrari was a lovely car but totally wasted on him really... I guess if I asked him why he bought it he would say he just likes beautiful things or enjoys the finer things in life and I wouldn't blame him for that. To his credit he enjoys sharing a taste of such luxuries with me because he knows of my love for motive power so I've had some fun experiences through him - opening the taps fully on his Princess 64 boat was a highlight!!

I'm not really sure what the problem is. A colleague of mine has a Jaguar XKR-S. It's a lovely car, but has covered about 6000 miles in its 6-7 years on the road. He leaves it on his driveway and gets the AA or a local mech to reactivate it when he wants to drive it.

His money, his choice. He's said plenty of times that he's not a petrolhead and doesn't really care about cars any more than "this looks nice and I like driving it when I can".

I'm also on a computer forum and I see the same adenoidal traits on there too. I get lambasted because I bought an expensive machine (it's not that expensive) and I was told erm did you know that a real computer enthusiast would have bought a Mech 1 frame and an ASUS motherboard and used silicon putty gel on an Intel I7 9660 and put the best DDR5 RAM in whilst also using a solid state drive and whatever nVidia have to offer.

I don't care about that stuff on a computer, I like mine because it does what I need it to and looks pretty decent in my office. People who get wound up about others' choice of cars are no better than those who think it sacrilegious that you bought a Dell instead of some unknown make of high-performance computer.

Exactly, their money their choice.

Car nerds are getting fewer and fewer as cars become a bit less socially acceptable. Who cares if someone buys a car because it looks pretty / makes them feel good / because they can rather than what it can do.

A chap who used to work for one of our clients bought a Boxster S as his first car (learnt to drive in it later in life). He had no real interest in cars but liked the badge, way it looked etc. I’m sure a Boxster with L plates raised a few eyebrows.
