RE: Audi S8 Final Edition (D2) | Spotted
Discussion
Never been in one of these but on paper and in my mind an S8 would be the only geniuing alternative to my QPV.
I agree with other that £16k for an mk1 S8 is looking a bit rich. Then again if you try to replicate the condition by starting with a cheaper example it might cost more and that should be a consideration to anyone thinking of it as a medium / long term car. How many people would consider seriously purchasing though over say an M3 or RS8 etc?

D2, W140, E38. The 1990s were the true pinnacle of German car manufacturing. Possibly the greatest car decade ever (f1, f50, eb110, elise, e36, e46, skylines gt-r, imprezas, etc).
It makes Dan Prosser’s “Goodbye to all that” article ring so true.
We really had it good!
(i believe, we’ll have a great time with EVs as well, but it still gives us pause to witness the end of one of mankind’s most important stories).

Wheels are too big and I'm not fan of the chromed rear view mirrors. But other than, spectacular.
20” were standard as were the chrome mirrors on the S8. Either somebody has been busy on Photoshop or they’ve been chromed - they don’t look right (nor nice). The originals have a much nicer satin finish befitting the understated ness of the car. Not entirely convinced this is a Final Edition as I always thought they came with lairy interior colours: bright red or purple spring to mind. I had a 2002 reg one but that wasn’t classed as a Final Edition. There is tons of room, everywhere. I suspect the front seats were right back for the photos taken of the front cabin.
I miss it, they are fantastic.

These are great cars and I've driven many going back to when they were nearly new. Overall, they stack up well viewed in isolation or against their contempories. The problem arises when you compare them to their predecessor, the V8 [4.2]. The D11 has a much deeper baritone voice, is better built, mechanically tougher, much rarer and is even more fun to drive. Hustle it, and you feel its racing pedigree. It also has the necessary menace... for that dawn rendez-vous.

In fairness, it looks like a Final Edition, as the extended leather looks right. They weren't always spec'ed with the lairy colours, though they weren't commonly in the best taste! Even the steering wheel here gives you a hint. There is tons of room, everywhere. I suspect the front seats were right back for the photos taken of the front cabin.

Having driven all versions over the years, I'd say the 40v manual is the pick of the bunch. No RHD version though. But the automatic steals the true driving experience of these wonderful machines.
I agree, the early Tiptronic is both the main disappointment and the main weakness of the D2. However, if anyone really fancies one and is not put off by the Tiptronic, put aside 3-4k for a box rebuild and go for it! Also, unless you are very confident the the box has received recent and appropriate attention, arrange an oil and filter change. [better value examples are available]The Bandit said:

Have to disagree with you, having owned both in multiple iterations. The D11 feels heavier and ultimately slower. The D2 is much lighter on its feet. Of course, those of us who have one (cue smugness outbreak) are aware just how good these cars are. The aluminium construction is not just stiff and light (which it certainly is) but it doesn't rust either, a major consideration in an 18-year-old car. The 4-wheel-drive is brilliant at sensible speeds, very sure-footed. Whatever remains of the 360 bhp is still enough to give it plenty of shove (there you go, Ronin reference). My car sits on the earlier 18" 6-spoke Avus rims, a better look in my estimation. It's also black, with grey leather, walnut trim and just enough chrome highlights to make it look absolutely beautiful while retaining its stealthy persona. Two tailpipes are more than enough. The two features that make me giggle (performance and double-glazed serenity aside) are the electric rear window blind which still works faultlessly and the solar sunroof. On a hot day, it drives the air-con, so you get into a pre-cooled car each time. Fan-bloody-tastic. Mine's done @ 145k miles, is being fettled back to A1 condition at the financial rate of £1000 a year average, and I paid £3000 for it, four years ago. Stick it in D, leave the sport mode alone, as well as the tiptronic buttons and manual shift, and just waft around at ridiculous speeds. Never tried the TV (suspect it's analogue anyhow) nor the Playstation PS1 that's also there. Don't even bother with the 6CD autochanger in the boot or the Bose radio very often. It appears to be gaining in value at a rate that overcomes the "restoration" costs, so what's not to like? £72K when new, it says on the paperwork..........

Nope.Edited by DrSteveBrule on Monday 29th June 08:32
Aluminium mirrors were standard. Real metal, not chromed. Hence they were for a while, prone to being nicked and are wickedly expensive to replace.
20" wheels were only standard on Final edition vehicles. Though many S8's by 2002 were fitted with them as options.
Final editions are defined by their specs and colour, only specific combinations were available, and all had extended leather packs. Black with Silver inside is correct and so are the other details I can see within the photos, like no rear heated seats.

I was trying to think what small details would give it away; I forgot about the extended leather. Good call. The purple interior is something else!Reffro said:

Aluminium / chrome whatever, the point being that only the S8's had the metallic mirror casings. My 2002 S8 had 20" wheels - I didn't realise they were an option. I was only the 2nd owner from new, the first one had it 10 years. Dolphin Grey body with Aqua interior - it was a lovely combo. Bought it locally after seeing the advert on PH.Aluminium mirrors were standard. Real metal, not chromed. Hence they were for a while, prone to being nicked and are wickedly expensive to replace.
