I used to live round the corner from Slade's, I remember looking through those glass windows to see the rare exotica within as a young lad.

I've been less of a fan since they vastly undervalued my old Z4M but nevermind, they're running a different kind of show, based on making a profit from the very wealthy nearby Beaconsfield residents. Okay.

The garage is situated next to an old school ground, and most people do pass this bend observing the speed limit, that junction is nothing more than a quiet residential road with very little activity, but I can understand why you have reacted with shock and alarm.

Last time I stopped by to have a look, one of their Mercedes on the plot opposite (where the less rare stock lives outside in the rain!) had been lifted overnight on some chocks and the wheels/presumably cat/exhaust stolen. Bad times.

Worth noting that just out of shot is the lovely Penn pond and the Red Lion pub, that used to offer £2.50 pints of Chiltern Ale served by gorgeous sisters. I miss it & them terribly. smile

Big fan of DB9s especially the later cars which were better built and had more power. Either way still a fabulous looking GT and I also appreciate the looks of the XK too. However, the way that particular DB9 is promoted in those shots is awful, I never understand why that particular vendor always pictures their cars up on a kerb?!! It just smacks of a lack of effort.

Sebastain Tombs,
Some models of the 5.0L XKR have governors on them that restrict the top speed, but if you disable that or get the XKR175 or the XKRS, they are good up to 186mph the same as the factory claims for the DB9. So, I wouldn't go choosing one off at the next red light or on the Autobahn. and with a $600-700 pulley and tune, which many of us have done, we're straddling 600+ hp. I think the DB9 is a gorgeous car, and I like everything about it, but as we say on the Jaguar Forum, "why go sideways?" And honestly, you really don't want to challenge a 5.0L XKR on any performance parameters with your DB9.
Sorry but the moment you have to modify your car then you've lost.

Or for just £1,500 less you could have this with only 49,000 miles:

Interesting thread. I've pretty much my entire life been the budget end of car buying (sub 10k), but in the last few years, work and money have improved a lot in that I can now look at a 30K Aston, which for me, is an absolute dream. I've had this very discussion with my mate about both cars, but I'm looking for a comfortable GT car and aesthetics is top of the list, and hands down, the DB9 wins. Its a beautiful car from any angle.

I like slightly odd colour schemes, so my heart and money are focused on this one at the moment.

Black & Tan
That's the one I saw yesterday and thought it looked gorgeous. I'm not in the market for one, but SOTW and Brave Pill usually get me browsing the classifieds!

Oddly enough I saw my very first one of those yesterday.

Just as hideous as in pictures laugh.

Exactly. Yes to the Aston but not in the spec from the article example.

I know a few Jaguar owners, they all prefer their choices. What’s your point, some people like cars not talking down to others because they think that what they own is so superior?

What?

A Jaguar is a lovely car, it's not the same league as an Aston. Why have you got to be so confrontational?

This Jaguar Aston argument has been going on at least since the days of the XK 120. Alan Clark (reprinted in Back Fire) recalls taking a Californian friend to Earls Court.

We were at the stand of a British sports car firm which charges twice as much as Jaguar for a car that is 10 mph slower, and we became involved in an argument over the merits of the rival products. Our opponent fired what he hoped was a final shaft. It depends, he remarked with dignity, on what you want in a car

Hell man replied my companion I buy a sports car for just two things-trapping dolls and passing Cadillacs

My point is that Jaguar owners seem to think about Aston quite a lot. 7,840 entries, some headlines here:

"Will an XKR smoke an Aston Martin V8 Vantage?"
"Aston Martin "DB7 wheels on xjs"
"Aston Martin Conversion on Ebay"
"New to forum and F-Type - Aston DB 10 look alike?"
"Aston Martin exhaust on XK8 ??"
"Aston Martin Conversion 2001 XKR no reserve on eBay "
"Aston Martin tires on my F-Type?"
"JAG destroying the new Aston"
"Truly Ugly Aston"
"thinking of a DB7"
"Do Aston Martin's get a lot of attention? I mean come on it's a Aston"

and, my favourite:
"Warms My Heart - It makes me feel so good to hear that there are a lot of you that think our XKR's are better than the Aston"

All taken today from jaguarforums.com.

What do these threads say about Jaguars and their owners, and Aston Martin?

The DB9s have a timeless elegance but like most Astons, they are triumph of form and marketing over substance. Whenever I have been in one, I have been surprised by the poor ride quality particularly given that is a GT as opposed to an out and out sport car. In addition, like the V12 Vantage I owned, the torquey V12 shows up the lack of traction marking it impossible to use all the power except on warm, dry and smooth roads. And yet the looks and that engine...

I think most one make forums are pretty awful, but the Jaguar ones are the absolute pits. From owners running 120+ page threads on "Tibbles - The Cat That Can" to drivel like you've posted they run the full gamut of tts. The US users are easily the best contributors, taking cars to bits on their driveways and making new parts from scratch, but all the UK forums are full of angry red faced Geralds debating if their new eBay leaper is too hirsute for their beautiful 20 year old 2.0d X-Type with rotting sills.

In your opinion. Read what certain Aston owners are saying, I find those types of owners total snobs to be honest.

I thought that this thread was about DB9s, not Jaguars.

I have / have had Astons and Jags, they both have their attributes but they're different. Engineering, engine/transmission configuration, handling, balance and interior etc are all down to personal preference. Some people might buy something for 'the badge', the 'image' or 'lifestyle' (whatever those things mean), why else would badge-engineering exist, others just buy what they actually like and what suits their preferences and budget.

Years ago, Daimler dealers would say that Daimler owners saw the Sovereign as more prestigious than a 420 or XJ6 Jaguar and wouldn't buy a Jag, partly due to their perception of Jaguar owners. Now, those were the same cars.

The DB9 and XK are not the same; different body, different engine, different transmission set-up, different interiors. In fact, what is the same? Why not introduce Maserati etc..

Why don't people get back on topic.

tberg: your XKR is a great driver but you miss the point- it is NOT an Aston! The DB9 is no sports car, but a wonderful grand tourer. Two friends of mine at our weekly Cars and Coffee who own XKR's always wonder at the quality and presence of my DB9 Volante, from paint quality to the top mechanism and look with the top down. Is the DB9 a track car? No, but again, it is a fantastic grand tourer.

I think these are great looking motors. Stylish and sophisticated.

Black over tan would be my choice, or the tungsten with ivory or red leather.

These have even dropped down to the low 20s, for similar examples like this one. Staggering value for money.

I do think decent ones of these will begin to appreciate.

Curiously, the fleet of LHD DB9s used for the press launch in the hills above Nice all had a spookily supple ride with minimal pitch and roll.

Yet, when anybody drove a different press car after the launch, it felt as if the dampers were filled with compacted gravel.

The suspicion was that the Nice press fleet had very trick dampers – made by Ohlins? – which never made it onto production cars, much to Bez’s chagrin.
