Does a V12 Vantage count as a supercar?
Manual box, 6.0 n/a V12, 190+ mph and sub 5sec 0-60 seems to tick a lot of boxes. Also seems to pass the intangible ‘exotica’ brand test (cf Audi vs Lambo).
On the other side, it’s based on more humble underpinnings and will get the inevitable “it’s just two V6 Duratecs bolted together” criticism.
Either way, my money would go here:

It’s even in Mako Blue, the same colour as the original GT prototype
It’s certainly fast enough to be considered a supercar but is the most frustrating car I have ever owned. Looks and sound to die for but unusable in any meaningful way except on perfectly smooth roads and in warm conditions. Awful traction and a tendency to jump around on a typical British A/B road means that a Golf GTI would be large in your mirrors and a Boxster disappearing off into the distance. Perhaps the ‘S’ was better?Manual box, 6.0 n/a V12, 190+ mph and sub 5sec 0-60 seems to tick a lot of boxes. Also seems to pass the intangible ‘exotica’ brand test (cf Audi vs Lambo).

There’s a lot of back and forth on this thread about what is or isn’t a Supercar.
I think that the term was first used about a Lamborghini Miura and yer we have had discussion about the 360 being able to be outperformed by a fairly regular car.
I am puzzled by this type of comment in this and other forums - there seems to be some sort of folklore that old cars are slow.. A Ferrari 360 has 395 bhp, has a kerb weight of about 1500 kg, will do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and tops out at about 175 mph (test figures, not manufacturer's stats). I expect many PHers can give me a list of 'fairly regular' or 'ordinary' cars, that will beat those figures, but none spring to my mind. (I don't consider Golf Rs, Audi RS3s or the various high spec Renaults to be 'ordinary', but perhaps that means I'm not a proper PHer!).I think that the term was first used about a Lamborghini Miura and yer we have had discussion about the 360 being able to be outperformed by a fairly regular car.

This article others like it and all the recent excess of "spotted" stuff is just aimed at getting folk to trawl through the classifieds and help dig PH's income stream out of the Covid doldrums.
You mean they are trying to generate revenue by providing compelling content? How dare they!!!According to the number next to my name, this month represents 15 years since I landed on PH and in all that time I've never known anyone moan about excuses to browse the classifieds. I actually thought browsing the classifieds was pretty much the law??

Considering how little money I have to spend on cars, browsing the ads and auto trader takes up a surprisingly long duration of my day, almost every day. In most respects the R8 is the "sensible" choice. The thing that kills it is the lack of luggage space - even a weekend away would be a challenge 2 up.
If it is a hard top R8 rather than the drop top then there is plenty of space if you use the shelf behind the seats. Get a tailored travel bag for something like £120 as I did and you are good to go. Space in the front too for a couple of bags too.FN2TypeR said:
I was banking on service and maintenance costs of about three grand a year, but recognising that I'd have to be willing to sink about five grand if something went tits up, which is doable, so I wouldn't have to run it on a shoe string.
It would be a second car, but no, I wouldn't be afraid to use it; life is too short to have something like that sitting around unused IMO! I live in Aberdeen and commute to Montrose which is a 98 mile round trip, perhaps a bit longer if I take the fun route home; it'd be a nice Friday car for such a journey

I looked at selling the Duetto and putting it towards a 360.
Something in me just said no to tying up all that cash, when work is in a very fickle industry.
Then my mate died and I am seriously thinking of saying bks and buying the shoes anyway, so to speak.

The budget would cover a V10 R8 GT. Manual, carbon everywhere, alcantarra buckets and very rare. A true supercar.
Why would you choose a vanilla V8 instead?
Because many reviewers actually preferred the V8? Slightly lighter and better balanced. Why would you choose a vanilla V8 instead?
The R8 V10 is a monster, especially with a manual gearbox. Nobody in their right mind who has genuinely driven one would say that there is an issue in the handling dept - the front end is nailed down, you can get on the power crazy early, it sounds epic with a tweaked exhaust and it is playful - I mean 120mph on opposite lock playful. So lets have no more if this nonsense please!
In terms of performance, yes on paper people may say 'I can live with a second slower to 60' but behind the wheel it is totally different. The V10 is a monster. I don't know the times but I imagine in the mid-range the V10 would destroy the V8 and pretty much everything you will ever come up against whether on the road or on the track. And that V10 is howling away at nearly 9000 rpm behind your head...… Epic.
The perfect supercar for those with hands-on driving experience rather than internet tables and pictures. End of.

Sometimes life gives you a wake-up call to dash any pretense of immortality. Colleague of mine, same age, same industry, made an absolute ton of cash and all he did was buy a fat tail Harley and a Jacuzzi. Contracted a malignant melanoma and in his last few weeks on this earth I tried to call him; his wife answered and wanted to know when she would get 'her' money from a joint business. I can't tell you how deeply that hit, but it was enough for me to turn around and buy two Ferraris in 3 days (250GTE & 512BB). I looked at selling the Duetto and putting it towards a 360.

The v8 isn’t a supercar though.
