911 Cabriolet's never look nice. I seriously don't know why Porsche make them?

Out of the 2 cars there, I'd go for the McLaren. It looks better.

For me, I think the Turbo would be better as a Targa rather than a Cabriolet. Now I'd probably take that over the McLaren

I'd still take a hard top 911 Turbo S over pretty much anything else though.
I reckon they probably sell them because they make money from them.
Exactly. In fact, I seriously don't know why someone would ask that question?

Turbo Targa would be a great proposition.

McLaren for me - it feedbacks more than the Porker and this is a big deal within this segment.

The 911 is VERY impressive initially I am sure, because of its acceleration, but so is the McLaren.

Where the Porche comparatively stops there, the McLaren continues to speak to you through the chassis and steering more. So its a more stimulating drive.

Then there are the looks. The McLaren looks like a supercar, the 911 just does not.

So if I HAD to choose between these two, I'd pick the McLaren.

In reality I would, in that price range go for something else.

I'd also take the Turbo Coupe over either of these. I'd also take the Porsche over the McLaren and spend some of the £70k change (more change with the Coupe, I expect) on a proper new Sports racing Car (such as a Sports 2000 MCR) and trailer, and get my extreme thrills on a race track, even if only at Track Day level. The MCR would eat both of these alive in that environment. But that, as they say, is not the point. The McLaren, beautiful though it is, has no real purpose. However, those that can afford one do not live in my version of the real world, so best of luck to them. The very fact that it exists in this sanitised society we inhabit should be celebrated.

Because I had an opinion and expressed it.

Sorry, I may have misunderstood. The fact you put a question mark suggested to me that you asked a question, rather than stating your opinion. The question mark made me think you were asking why they were being made because you couldn't understand why. I was simply stating why they're made. Some people like them, those people buy them, Porsche makes money. Pretty simple.

Both capable of making a good summers day? Not if the mclaren breaks down or locks you inside.

These are 2 different cars. The mclaren is a track weapon, the Porsche is just a nice car for the road with ridiculous performance.

I would either get a 720s for a mclaren, or a C2 911

I love 911s and would like to say I’d have this one in a heartbeat, but the dashboard looks too fussy in this latest iteration.
But I guess the think that clinched it for me would be wether I could bundle SWMBO into either car and cruise down through France and Spain, talking sufficient luggage that we didn’t have to go commando after a couple of days.
That alone seems to rule out the McSpider as the paucity of stowage space is thrown into contrast by the Porker which, in comparison, is a veritable automotive travel trunk.
I’d be interested to know how reliable the McSpider is against the 911, as I have it in my mind that it wouldn’t be close?
Oddly, I live in semi-rural Derbyshire and there are 2 McLaren’s within a minute of me, and a handful that I see regularly that live locally, but never see a 911 at all...

And agree again, with both of those statements.

Porsche 911 has always been my 'Holy Grail' but that MCLaren...my my. The side profile is gorgeous.
The 911 has been chewing the fat over the last few years. That rear end..Hmmm, not sure.

Disagree. 911 cabriolets look fantastic, and always have done. I would only have the softtop. That's why Porsche make them, because there's a market for them, because different people like different things.

I don't doubt that it's an impressive car, but £165k for a 911 before you add options? That's nuts. It looks every kg of its lardy kerb weight too.

Each to their own of course, my entirely theoretical £165k would be spent on a very different convertible: the DB11 Volante. Not as fast, but fast enough and infinitely prettier with the roof up or down.

I actually think it makes a bit of sense comparing the two cars in the way that it exposes the fact how utterly bad value the McLaren is in this comparison. 70k more expensive and with shocking residuals you really must apply huge amounts of man-math to make that calculation work.

It's a fair point, goes to show what a ridiculous market it is. Porsche build 3-4 x the number of 911 Turbo S and Carwow came out with them as one of the bottom 5 for reliability, yet they're perceived as bulletproof and hold their value?

They re not rivals so why pit them against each other? Totally different kinds of car. Waste of an article.
Except they are.

When I chop my turbo it will be for a turbo s or a 720. The issue I have, as outlined in this excellent article is can I live with the Macca as my DD. The pork isn’t quite as special but it wins out in pretty much every other respect.

As some have posted already, I don't see these as natural rivals.
Watched the Car Wow drag race this morning with the hard top Turbo S and Tycan. The 911 takes off like a rocket!

Both lovely cars, but the Porsche just that little bit more appealing. IMO, especially as an ownership proposition.
