Hello,

My extended warranty is due to run out at the end of the month (30th June). I negotiated 2 yrs when i purchased the car from BMW Used approved (64 plate X6). I have received a quote from BMW insurance services to extend the warranty however I am also planning to sell the car.

So my questions...would having a 12 month warranty (drive line only) in place make the car more appealing to buyers and will the cost of it (approx £1,000) add sufficient value to justify the spend?

Any advice gratefully received

Agreed, fully comp BMW Warranty would be something I look for but Driveline wouldn't sway me.

When I was in the same position as you I switched to paying monthly for the warranty as I knew the car would be sold in a few months so I knew if anything happened to the car in the time I had it it'd be covered. I'd previously nearly done a deal on a car the year before (when I'd had a 12 month policy) and from what I could tell having the warranty made absolutely no difference in part-ex price to BMW dealers.

Thanks for the responses.

I will probably take the monthly option to cover me while I still have it.

I wouldn't buy a modern used BMW without the proper BMW warranty so I'd be looking for a car with a warranty on it or the right to extend it myself after buying the car. As others have said, the monthly option seems to be the answer as it keeps your cost down while keeping the warranty intact for the new owner to continue themself if they so wish. As an aside, it never ceases to amaze me that independent dealers sell modern BMWs with stty aftermarket warranties instead of maintaining the BMW one.

I will go for the full comp version so at least it is an option for any new buyer that wants to maintain it. I am assuming that once I start the monthly payments it is transferrable to the new owner but will ring them tomorrow to confirm everything.

I may have read it wrong, but I was under the impression that an upfront annual policy is transferable.

And the monthly wasn’t.

What is the mileage?

If you are at between 40 and 60k miles it might actually put people off buying your car.

Many would want to add the warranty but do it monthly.

Buy it with a years warranty and go over the 60k mile point and the warranty would start costing considerably more.

98k, I have a small window to purchase a warranty before it is no longer an option from them

Just spoke to BMW Warranty. The monthly pay option is 'transferable' in the sense that the new owner has 10days from when I cancel to take up the policy, at the same price I had it, as long as it remains below 100k at the time of change. It will be treated as if the policy is continous

After 10days it becomes a lapsed policy so they would likely have to get a requote at a higher price

I would definitely do it monthly, and explain that it can be continued, even if they want to do it for the first 3 months or so to give them confidence in the car.

When negotiating you could say "How about I knock off say 6 months of warranty fees to so you have the same level of cover as buying approved used?"

That might bag the sale.

Worth noting, that the comprehensive warranty with a £100 excess and breakdown cover is over £2.5k Or £1750 with the £250 excess.

I guess that gives the AUC warranty with zero excess a value of about £3k ?

When I originally purchased it approved used I got 2yrs warranty. It was the final thing I asked for once we had agreed a price to 'seal the deal'. In real terms it is basically a £2.5k+ additional discount.
