Thinking of refreshing the plastic frame on the windows, looking for a decent plastic pain, any suggestions?

For the same reason, I did a lot of research on this. In the end plumped for:

I used their 'Dark Grey Gloss' finish and it works very well. Finish will be down to how careful and patient you are. Cleaning the frames well and masking effectively took ages. You don't need primer and you will need two coats. I found it best to do a rough coat first, let it dry and come back for a second which makes total coverage quite easy.

There was a thread on here a few months ago which helped me decide on Zinsser AllCoat Exterior paint for my garage doors. I can’t speak for the other exterior paints as I haven’t used them but the Zinsser stuff went on great and looks really good. The satin finish AllCoat doesn’t require a primer pre coat either. I tried a couple of test patches on the back of the door and found it looked best done with 3 coats using a gloss roller rather than 2 with a brush.

So you used rustoleum in the can to paint the upvc frames? Been quoted nearly £1,200 for 5 large windows, tempted to give it a bash myself now. What’s the general finish like? Any ideas at this stage on durability? I’ve used rustoleum for a few small projects, never thought about upvc.

Yes. Finish will be down to how careful you are I guess. A small roller on the flatter sections worked very nicely. The finish is fine but I suspect that's more about me rather than the paint. My windows look great but if you get really up close and personal with them, there are some areas that could use a little sanding back and re-covering but I'm happy enough with the end result and can't be arsed to be a perfectionist. Garage door was a bh.

I've just done some of my awful brown uPVC windows to white. Looks decent.

  • Clean with acetone or meths
  • Zinsser bullseye 1-2-3 water based primer, 2 coats, 1 hour between coats and an hour to dry
  • Zinsser Allcoat water based white, I needed 2/3 coats to cover the brown. Using a better brush covered better
All cleans up in water. Be careful using a blade to clean the glass after, the paint holds together well and needs a blade around the edge to ensure it doesn't lift off.
