Sorry to be cynical but was this a genuine accident and a opportunistic theft or a crash for cash “accident” ie planned ?
This had crossed our minds but I was returning from work and was at the crash scene very quickly and there are things that happened that couldn’t of been planned, but again the other party’s car was stolen , on false plates , Anything that could go wrong with this event pretty much has.

I find this post weird (and I work for an car insurer) that they paid her out, you are registered keeper of the vehicle and a claim against you as main policyholder so I would had thought they'd pay you instantly.

Also this is surprising as it could be viewed as money laundering with where payout occurred? Imagine if your daughter fled to fund terrorism in syria...completely different ballgame here!

Personally I'd be getting the wife to deal with this, I wonder if this step daughter owed "people" money?

Have you considered that now your control is taken off the policies she could cancel your insurance, leaving you liable to 6 points?
