I don't understand the mentality of car fans willing to destroy the climate just for holding on to an archaic outdated means of transport..

That seems psychopathic.
I don't understand the mentality of EV enthusiasts on a site called PISTONheads.

Large parts of Africa and East Asia are only now starting to industrialise and modernise. They are a good 30 or 40 years behind Western countries. And you think the environmental destruction so far has been quite bad? You haven't seen anything yet until 2 billion people aspire for the lifestyle that you hold in such high regard.

Quite.

Remarkable to think the offended green brigade still consider ice cars to be a climate threat in the grand scheme of things.

Hilarious.

Let's put green matters to the side for a minute. Huge, instant torque, savage accelration, easy to engineer fwd, rwd, awd. Low maintenance, low ownership costs.. and this is only in its infancy, and only one of many solutions to the finite fossil fuel problem. I find ot remarkable that car enthusiasts aren't more enthused!!

I’m surprised people don’t recognise it’s the imperfections that make the ICE, a bit like us! EV bore me to hell, but they’re coming, and crying over the demise of the ICE is a bit of a first world problem - get me some tissues...

Huge torque and instant acceleration are immediately forgettable if the car has no emotive connection and involvement from a drivers perspective.

Unfortunately all EVs fit into this category.

Almost like eating a Macdonalds extremely quickly. Or drinking generic and very crappy instant coffee. Or even driving a Mclaren.

Instantly forgettable.

I can't see myself ever not having a petrol car for fun. For everything else I'm looking forward to the convenience and cleanliness of an EV.

Fortunately, I suppose, I have little interest in modern petrol cars for fun so their impending demise doesn't really concern me.
Agree with this.

I just hope they give the hobbyists a break.
Put our weekenders on 5k mile pa or something before taxing the living daylights out of them.

did you see Harris drive the vw ev concept racer? Didn't look very forgettable to me. Never had he experienced go like it and its handling and grip kinda scared him. Its easy to confuse ev with i3 or leaf, they are designed as white goods a to b transport, but look what they can do with big motors. The veryon was a landmark, 1000hp. Look at the engineering and cost that required. 1000hp plus hypercars will become the norm with electric power. Smaller, lighter motors in small light caterham style cars, bike performance, zero maintenance, or virtually. Ev for performance is a wholly different page in the engineering book. Give it a go before you damn it....

Fox hunters and cigar smokers can still enjoy their hobbies, as long as they take into account the changes in the way that society views their hobby and the regulation that comes with that.

Music lovers and railway enthusiasts can still enjoy their hobbies, provided they weren't more hung up on the mode of delivery than the activity itself.

So it will be with driving.

I just see electric as a great steeping stone to the future, and the demand will mean we will habe to, as a planet, invest more in a cleaner infrastructure to produce it. It can be all things to all men, from silent, refined city cars to off readers with a motor in each hub to drive and brake, hypercars and suoercars with huge outputs, hobby cars with light simple engines and shorter charge times for track or social use. It seems that this power source can be a jack of all trades and master them all depending on application.

Better stop flying and eating meat as well... I’m actually accepting of EV, just happy I got to experience the ICE in all it’s glory.

Also, based on the current Instagram generation, fk’em! wink

I've given it a go. I've driven loads of electric vehicles including a Zoe, an i3, both generations of Leaf, a Tesla, and even obscurities such as an electric Up, a G-Wiz, some small Nissan van and an electric Mitsubishi i. I can see why they appeal to some, but they just don't do it for me. If that makes me an old relic then so be it (although with a name like "Rob" I suspect you're at least a decade older than I am)!

In the meantime, I will continue to selfishly destroy the planet by pottering about in a little French hatchback.
