It has been mentioned already, but it really is amazing how people here are being so judgemental about others purely because they choose to display a different number plate on their vehicle.
I have had the same number for 24 years and it has been on every car I have owned since then. It is in a completely legal format but apparently this makes me 'sad' and 'egotistical'. frown

I find personalised plates a sad egotistical behaviour which will only ever be of satisfaction to the onlooker helping out a police enquiry...

Once read about a moronic bank robber who will not only was dumb enough to do it in his own car but has a personal reg plate took so it did not work well for him at all.
Just as an FYI, all number plates are individual so will help the police regardless. Unless you're so simple it needs to be less than 7 characters to remember it.

I find 7 letter/number plates to look a bit messy and play on my OCD. In the same way I can’t stand silver badging with model names/numbers and engine spec etc all over the boot of a car. My cars only have the marque badge. Just find the look cleaner of a private plate.

It’s always been my understanding that initials are acceptable. Words or any names spelt out are “naff”.

Spacing, typeface/lettering, plate size and colouring must be legal or otherwise not only do you risk being pulled over/fined it’s also naff!

Love the idea of a great plate on a very old wonky car scenario rather than a flash Harry in his lambo with H4ZZA on a tiny short plate in weird wonky lettering.

But to be fair, shouldn’t really judge as it’s all about the owners experience rather than ours! Though we have been known to shout the name on a number plate and wave at very bemused owners…. well if you don’t want us to know your name best not put it on a plate smile

I think a non-butchered private plate in a decent format (e.g. A1 ABC, or AAA 123) looks a bit neater than the AB12 XYZ style on a car. I have three. None cost more than £200 originally.
Same. I have four A1 AAA plates I bought back in the late 90’s when they first came out for peanuts. They spell nothing and just just contain family initials.

They have never been miss spaced or had extra bolts added and I resent the implication that I would support such open tttery by default.

I read the forums every now and again for laughs. The amount of bob that comes out of people on here is a joke in itself. So best advice is not to take anything people say on here too seriously / personal.

I have no issues with people who drive with private plates, because who cares? I only dislike those who a) add stupid badges on their cars, e.g. M3 badge and grilles on their 320i SE banger, and b) those who retrofit their chav mobil in 2022 with 10k manual HID lights that blind the sun.

I agree.
The former I think it makes the person who did it appear stupid, and the latter is genuinely irritating and potentially dangerous, not to mention illegal.
I went the opposite way with badges on my car and had them all removed from new.

Vanity of course.

If you're materialistic and aspirational and need to impress it's essential not to be seen miserably failing at the Game of Life by owning an older car so the ability to both disguise a vehicles age and adorn it with the conspicuous display of wealth that's represented by a distinctive or non dating registration is a perfect win-win for such people.
I have a personal plate.

It was first issued new on my grandfather's Rolls Royce.

It was my parents wedding car.

I came home from the hospital in that car after being born.

As did my siblings.

On my grandfather's death, it was passed to my father.

And then to me.

And it will continue to pass through our family.

I won't type what I think your post, Jaguar Steve.

My basic rule of thumb is all of the following are driven by weapon grade bellends and should be avoided.

Anything with a 4D number plate.
Anything with a B055 or GUN number plate, especially if it is on an old Range Rover that looks like it is owned by a drugs dealer.
Anything where the number plate has mismatched spacing, the wrong font, or a piece of tape or number plate screw to alter the letters
Anything with a Northern Irish plate

The only time personalised plates are ever allowed is when they are pre prefix and then only if it is really short and doesn't spell anything.

Assume he means the Hatton Garden job.

Why would having a private plate make a difference if you use your own car?

I have one. It belonged to a close relative of mine; he bought it in the late 60's. We shared the same first name. As a kid I was always asking if I could have it. In the early 00's he had to give up driving after suffering a stroke. I bought the car from him. I effectively gave him the going rate for the plate; he threw the car in for nothing. I kept the car but transferred the plate to my Impreza.

After a while I became self-conscious about the plate (no idea why!) I put it on retention where it's remained ever since. I know that I could sell it and get a decent profit, but I find myself in the position where I don't want it on the car nor do I want to sell it due to the sentimental value. Although I'm certain it'll be the first thing my Daughter sells when I croak!! biggrin

Presumably, easier for witnesses to recall than a 'normal' plate.

Feel free, I don't mind. smile

You appear to be in very similar situation with your personal plate as I am with mine which was originally my grandfathers in the '30s and has seen all the family births, marriages and deaths too, but clearly you have a different opinion about them than me.

Different opinions are important as those are the ones you can learn from so post away.

Don't waste your breath. Wealth whispers with Jaguar Steve, he has this deep insecurity that means he has to slate anyone who doesn't conform to his ideals.

I don't normally deign to respond to personal insults but my word a 4 minute response is quick even for you.

Please don't tell me you're so desperate to commence another of your playground bully little spats you've been prowling PH all afternoon looking for a confrontation or you've actually gone to the trouble of setting up an alert for wherever I post anything, and do try to keep in mind if whatever viewpoint anybody may post doesn't actually apply to you there's no need to butt in and throw your toys around the nursery over it.

Because of course every single time you do fling your toys about that strongly suggests to everybody they've nailed it and you're busted.

I like ‘em! I think they finish off a car in terms of personalisation. You choose the colour of the car, the wheels you like, the interior… and why not a number plate too?

I don’t see them as vanity, most of them cost a tiny fraction of the running and purchase costs of a car. I got mine to make my car more personal to me and I think most people are the same. In all my life I have never heard anyone brag about their number plate! laugh

I don’t get the hate, always interesting seeing what people choose for their car when out and about. smile

Had my plate, 3 initials and two numbers, on various private hire cars for 20 odd years. Only a few comments, even though the number was texted to customers.

Prefer a little anominity on the roads these days, seems such a popular thing now though, sometimes feel I'm the odd one out in the car park with my standard DVLA issue plate on - maybe it's because it's become so easy to do online now compared to the post system of old, and the vast amounts of sites selling them probably now.
