I am sure this has been covered before:
'Private' plate = Council.
Naff or Cool is for someone else to decide, but either way - council.
The missus has SHZ 3532 (Sharon/Shazzer, I have on my Cayman V40 AG (AG, my initials). Also have a number of other council plates, none which are worth much, the two aforementioned were only £400 and £350,some of which would likely get you very irate due to sp 'a. c_i*n/g screws ect but really don't care. 'Private' plate = Council.

We must be in the minority though as we live in a £750k property within a private deer park..
- Edited due to council effect spelling*

..and that is exactly how it should beAs the thread title question is binary multiple choice, the correct answer is 'Naff'.
If the question was open, the correct answer would be 'Almost always naff'.
The only exceptions to being naff are two or three character plates on old Rollers/Bentleys/Astons.

..and that is exactly how it should beThat's where the real issue lies in my view, not so much with the plate itself but rather with the invariably noisy ostentatious loadsamoney people who purchase them to show off to everybody how much spare cash they've got.
Imitating a vanity plate by fulking about with spacing or trying to spell words with numbers and a handful of random screws and then trying to kid everybody you've got one as well simply takes that ostentatious loadsamoney mindset to a whole new level.
So no, vanity plates aren't worthy of attention in themselves but they always serve a useful purpose in identifying the sort of people who think they are.
I always thought they were really cool, then I dated a girl who had one when I was about 20.
She had one, her mum and dad had one and all her friends did. It was a constant conversation topic and seeing it from the outside (not having one) it really put me off as naff.
This group of people were a bit like a version of made in Chelsea, at least they thought they were. Anyway it put me off private plates and people from Harrogate.
They were also very loosely personalised. I can’t remember but they were like C oh I love cats, B for Barry and 74 as that the year we met. It always felt a bit like when cheap psychic readers throw out a lead and believers make it stick.
But now I think if you like them get one. I don’t think I would think it naff unless the owner insisted on explaining it unsolicited.

My number plate on my Volvo V70 is:
56 TDV.
It was first registered in Exeter in 1936 when it was put on a tractor.
I've been thinking of acquiring an old Northern Ireland reg not for personal promotion but to 'keep it alive'56 TDV.
It was first registered in Exeter in 1936 when it was put on a tractor.
NI registrations are often called dateless but the system is actually fairly easy to calculate to the approximate date of issue. So I fancy an old AXI plate as were common around Belfast in the late 1970s
They always came across as a bit wkery to me, but a friend had a close relative die and he now has the plate and so I could understand the sentimental value.
A lot of the cars though seem like it's a bit like a checklist. It seems almost compulsory that any 320d or similar has a 5 character plate on (not exactly but near enough.
I always feel like the mispaced and bodged ones remove all illusion that the owner is able to afford the numberplate they really want. Much better to keep it in the correct format and accept what you've got.

I have a private plate... but only after some scrote stole my normal 66 plate... I got something memorable for the family. Youngest daughter's first word was "Bye", so that features. Otherwise, it's spaced correctly, none of this tinted, 4-D nonsense. Handy that if I ever change cars, the parking permit transfers too, without the hassle from the Council.
I've seen some awful plates out there, one guy had "BENZ" with a severely doctored "6" made to look like a lowercase "B"

Can take the man out of council but you'll never take the council out of a man. We must be in the minority though as we live in a £750k property within a private deer park..
I'm sure Harry Enfield had a little sketch about your last line.

My latest car came with one that is M6 and 3 letters. While it is a BMW, it's a Z4 so definitely not an M6!
I wouldn't have bought it but it can stay on - unless an M6 owner wants to offer me loads of money for it. Then I just might think about buying one that means something to me, but probably not!
Although those are the ones that seem really pointless to me. Surely you know if you've got an X5 without needing an X5 plate on it?
