What cars have you bought that have turned out to be nightmare in terms of repairs and bills?

Have you ever had to cut your losses on a car which was costing you too much?

Yes, my E46 325ti was a pain in the arse that seemed to hate my wallet. I ended up getting shot eventually.

My second ever car, a Ford Orion. Biggest piece of crap I ever owned. Never had a Ford since.

My TVR 350i. Spent about 7 months out of a year of ownership in the garage being repaired. Burnt through three, yes three, ignition systems.... In a year...

But if I had garage space and could find another one, I'd still buy......

Yes 2006 Porsche Cayman.

Bore scored.

Bill to rebuild it properly (Full Hartec) was nearly 40% of cars value.

I traded it in to a smarmy BMW salesman that tried screwing me on everything. I went back about 6 weeks later for some minor warranty work and apparently they were not best pleased the engine was borked.

Serves them right smarmy gits offering a silly trade in value. Then trying to sneak £1k worth of paint protection, alloy wheel, gap in to the invoice after having to tell them no for nearly an hour. No, No, No, No, No. do they not understand or are they hard of hearing. Why couldn’t the tt just accept no. Every time coming back with some bullst excuse as to why I should use BMW gap insurance (I used arla for about 1/4 the cost), Protect X (Went to a wrapping company had had a PPF added instead of some crap chemical that Protect X is).

Mazda RX-8. Awful engine ruined what could have been an otherwise decent car.

- Unreliable
- No torque
- Sounded like a washing machine
- Twitchy on the original tyres
- Running costs similar to those of a supercar of the time

My MX5. A fantastically balanced and fun car utterly let down by the fact that they are completely unsuited to an environment where water exists in any quantity.

Wouldn’t own another Japanese car now, just cba with the hassle of it rusting to pieces around the seemingly reliable mechanicals.

A mk 2 Golf GTi, which I made the mistake of only quickly test driving in the dark and not thinking to check if the handbrake worked. Then the waterpump went on the way home. Then I looked at it in daylight and realised it was 2 very different shades of red. It didn't get much better in the subsequent months, ending up with me selling it for less than the MOT work I'd just had done. Only car I've ever owned where I was actually hoping it would get crashed into or stolen.

62 plate Audi A5, leaking water through all the electrics in the boot, wheel bearing failed, turbo failed, problem with electric steering, then Audi damaged the bodywork while investigating the above. All this at less than 25,000 miles And less than 2 years old. It ended up going back to dealer after 6 months for a full refund luckily. If I’d had to pay for the issues then £3k+. Proper ‘Friday afternoon’ car.

BMW 645. Needed gearbox rebuild almost immediately, had other issues with the engine. Plus I later found out it had been smashed up.

I lost a lot of money in the 18 months of owning that.

Didn't put me off BMWs though. I've had two since, and both were flawless.

Jaguar XJ12. Body had been patched up and resprayed prior to sale. Rust started bubbling through after a couple of years. Everywhere.
I loved the car but I could not afford to repair it properly.

Bought a brand new Peugeot 106 years ago. In the 1st year, 5 gearboxes, 1 flywheel, 2 starter motors, 1 radiator and a battery. Car wasn't bad, dealer was incompetant beyond belief.

MX5 mk3.75

Genuinely don’t see what the fuss is about. Slow as.

Keep it less than six months and used it as a deposit against an Abarth 595 Comp which was fabulous. Still miss it...

That can't be true - 5 gearboxes in a year ?!

FN2 Type R. Stunk of dog, couldn't get rid of the smell no matter what. An exhaust rattle I was promised was a hanger was actually the baffles, and a backbox was £500 fitted. Caliper seized on boxing day - £500 for discs pads and caliper. A very dodgy smart repair gave way shortly after buying it - paint peeled off in my hands and the wheel arch detached itself from the car. Sold it for quite a bit less than I paid about 9 months after I bought it.

Edit: oh and I put four tyres on it at 130 quid a corner. And the 19" rage alloys were corroded and 150 quid a corner to sort. And the ride was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

2009 civic type s 2.2 diesel. Still have it, but we are looking at replacing it within the year. Rattles, hard ride, crap handling and uncomfortable seats.

I wouldn’t tar all Japanese/ Korean stuff with this brush. MX5 seems much worse than average ... fairly humdrum Toyotas and Hondas are ok for rust resistance.Middle aged Mazdas, less so. When it emerged that Mk1 (pop up headlight) MX’s were serial rusters, I toyed with buying low mileage, garaged FMSH etc Mk 2 from my rich sister in law . Narrow escape,it seems as these also rust like hell. These were both hyped by classic car mags, who only belatedly faced the rust issue.

2001 Audi A6 1.8T Avant CVT. Bought at 5 years old, 40k miles ish. Several £1k plus repair bills effectively rebuilding the gearbox & driveshafts twice over as they were made of cheese, the soft stuff that runs off the plate at room temperature.

Not me, but a relation had an L322 Range Rover for half a year. He spent around £11k on it - not to buy - in maintenance. Engine, electrical, suspension, coolant system, lots of other niggles too. After all that shyte, he thought it was finally a good one and decided to trust it to drive to the south of France...you can probably see where this is going...it caught fire and left him stranded by the side of the road.

He still gets angry when you mention the words Range Rover.

Oh, I'm sure he had picked up numerous punctures too. It was just one of those cars.
