VW Passat W8, £2,500

Not the bargest of barges, but certainly has the possibility of whaft factor and 100% fear of repair bills factor
The mix of Goodyear Eagles and Avon Ice Touring tyres is a good sign.

Have wheels ever looked so out of place on a car??

That's more like what they're worth, and you'd buy it as a curio for that even though the number of tailpipes to performance ratio is way out.

I shall take this opportunity to remind anyone looking to buy a car privately or from a dealer that you should not believe anything about the history and car that you cannot verify with your own eyes in person, and cross check claimed services/history against the mileage and date of MOT checks too. wink

Not really following the W8 market so I don`t know what they worth, but the price does not seem to be too astronomical

What do you mean? I was about to test drive an Audi S3, with no reported faults, apart from an unknown tune, missing services, replaced drivers window, misaligned panels ect, but the dealer lost the keys, but he told me that his mate, who is an Audi tech, drove the car and said it is solid, stage 1 with tight clutch! Are you saying that it might have been a lie??

Is that Gulzar's?
I'm all for some flamboyance, but those wheels are truly awful.
I agree. Not least because he seems to have combined them with some 15mm spacers, in case a gold Rolls-Royce hadn't already sufficiently underlined his 'total wand' status.

Imagine sitting in that thing whilst another human being was within sight.
I risk being ostracised, but I quite like the wheels.

I think with the wrap removed (I assume it's black underneath) and the wheels redone in all-silver I think it'd look great.

I do have a soft spot for the Ghost though, much more than the Phantom.

It's quite a small V8 at 4 litres, and most companies were getting ~280bhp from their ~4 litre V8 in the late 90s and early 00s. From around then they all seemed to increase power and displacement significantly, and 380bhp+ became the norm for a mainstream V8, which does make the W8 look rather flaccid.

VW Made a lot of far out stuff in the late 90s and early 00s and it was almost exclusively disappointing, underdeveloped, and pointless. Probably made Ferdinand Piech happy though, and wasn't that the entire purpose of VAG at the time?

Makes Jaguars 3ltr v6s power seem almost impressive

I have a feeling that the W8 was an engineering project to help with the other configurations, or a drawing board oddity that they thought "sod it, why not". It's not under-powered compared to the V8s which were out at the same time (e.g. Jaguar, Mercedes, VW's other efforts), but the generations that followed, which were available at the same time, were significantly brawnier.

As when, having built the group to maximise the benefits of platform sharing, Piech gave Audi and VW the freedom to make their own luxury cars, only for them to independently engineer virtually the same car (from the customer's POV) twice.

Climb out of a Phaeton into an A8 and ponder on whether those two cars were really worth two separate projects! Piech. What a lad.

Absolute legend indeed. I'd love to assemble a Piech-wing of a car collection with everything he had a significant hand in.

I think you'll find that's a Phat One

The interior of the Phaeton is so horrible. I bet the mishmash of 50 different grey plastics looks even nastier contrasting with the caramac and dogst combo in that car.

I cannot see any rational reason whatsoever why anyone bought a Phaeton (or a Phat One) over a contemporary Audi A8.
