XJR for me, though silver is its second worst colour after white.

I'm cross posting this from the ///M/other/barge thread to garner the received wisdom from smoker barge threadists; I'm getting a trifle bored with the tedium of rusty old BMW's so I have started looking toward the three pointed star - can anyone give me an initial starter for ten on AMG E55 and E63 estates and any probable pitfalls, no-no's and good things to look for?

And just as an aside just how silly a purchase would a sub £20k S65 be...

Maybe you should start buying knackered old Hondas? Every week there are a loads of stories on local social media of them having their Cats stolen while parked up in town. One I heard has been done three times. Seems the Honda Jazz has the most expensive but easiest to access Cat and usually it is a poor old person that is fked over by the tts who think they are entitled to take whatever they want.

I am assuming my old Honda Accord doesn't have a valuable cat, or it is hard to get to, as it hasn't been targeted - I need to find out.
What year/engine is it?

(can I have the Jag for trips to the pub please?)
So you can do the "Err, terribly sorry chaps but I seem to have left my wallet in my other Jaguar.....do you mind getting this round in?" whilst chatting up the buxom barmaid?
That might work, although if you replaced it with the work “Lexus”, then said busty barmaid may ask why you aren’t shielding, or if your family know you are out?

You'd be familiar with the rust at least.

In today's latest ebay boredom reduction attempt, I was outbid on a Super V8 which thankfully didn't make reserve or else I'd have been a bit gutted.

That really does look nice. Very top money though but I think it may be worth it.

Speaking of Derin has anyone been in touch recently? I do hope he’s doing ok, missed around these parts.
+1 about Derin
Not 100% but I saw someone posting on a BMW topic on Instagram in the past couple of weeks with a ‘handle’ starting with ‘derin’. Could be coincidence
ETA - pretty sure they posted a link to the bmwclassics website which he owns, so maybe not a coincidence

Thanks cornershop. I imagine there is a very small number of Derin’s out there with a penchant for Munich’s finest so good to know he’s still in the mix as it were.

My barge choice from those offered would also be the XJR. Have to agree not in silver though and I’m with the Speckled one in favouring this particular combination:

Pretty much! 70k over 25 years is a big red flag - never been taken away, so it's never had a proper run. That'll be mechanically shagged, despite how shiny it looks - I've lived in Jersey half my life, cars over here are mostly knackered...

Oh dear, commiserations, what's the gearbox doing? I've always fancied trying to rebuild an autobox, manuals are a doddle.
I'd be inclined to buy a used box and do a swap. That's what I did when my old 320 TE self-destructed its 5 speed auto.

The diesel thing with low mileage users on a regular change cycle baffles me, not only now, but particularly 25 years ago when the math was easy and it was a no brainer. I was in sales and elderly people regularly used to come in wanting a diesel for the mpg, I would point out that the diesel cost significantly more to buy and would be worth a fair chunk less used than the petrol when traded in (as was actually the case back then for a boggo diesel) and they'd need to do at least XX,XXX miles a year just to bridge that cost/loss, and they were only doing 4000 a year, then the unpleasantness of diesel etc. I would sit them down with their best interests at heart, do the figures, which they would seemingly understand. I would win the battle every time, because the figures were straight and not insignificant, but I would lose the war, they'd buy a diesel elsewhere from someone who'd just take their order.

It used to amaze me that fleet managers would do the math and stick with petrol or go with diesel only where appropriate, but retail buyers wouldn't/couldn't see any further than the mpg. Properly stupid.
