The US market had a standard and Long 600, we only had the L. There is a year change where the screen in the back is on the roof and flips down rather than between the seats, and that ties in with the massage thing in the back becoming standard. I can’t remember which way round is which.

I know he’s marmite but the Doug DeMuro review is good. I’ve posted this before:

I looked at these last year when I was barge shopping. I'm not sure the 600 makes any sense over the 460 for an old car; it only seems to have existed as a tax fiddle or to get around low emission zones and suchlike, now it's just a lot of weight and complexity for no real benefit over a 460. I was hoping for performance approaching at least a contemporary 760, but the figures I've found online suggest it's more like 730d performance

https://zeperfs.com/en/fiche3282-lexus-ls-600h.htm

Great armrest though.
That says 14.1 to 100mph, the same website says over 20 seconds for a 730d (E65). I wouldn't call that similar performance.
Looks closer to 745i performance. Also looks like there is an L version.

There is an L version, but it's not long wheel base. It's just a different spec of gadgets.

Yes, despite the extra power the 600 is slower than the 460 (5.7 to 60 vs 6.3). The 460 is similar (TINY bit quicker) than a 750i.

Good info cat220, thanks.

Ross, I’m sure your Lexus beard is more fulsome than mine but there is a definite ‘L’ variety - the tv is fixed upright between the front seats and upholstered on the rear. The regular wheelbase has the fold away screens (in the roof?) a la 460 I believe.

Have to agree with Macron too - like it just because it does exist and why not. Closer to thread budget would be nice though.

ETA: lots of good beardage above. I’ll get my coat...

They were from 9k pre COVID.

Here’s the 10650 one on AT, dull colours, Lexus Health check takes centre stage in the ad, I like that. There are rarely few for sale as so few were sold.

Yes slower than a 460, but 4WD and batteries don’t help. Next volume maybe, I have cash to spend, just a case of finding a non black or silver one really. And Saint Nicola allowing anyone to leave their villa. Which is what Scottish people call a house...

Slightly over thread but this is tempting. Are these especially potentially ruinous?

The People's Pal bought this XF effectively through thread, a good read and the work done by the previous owner is thorough.

Morning troops, what do you think about this?

Were completely off my radar until there was a recent RR link on here. A lot are now barry’d but this one looks good for the miles and under thread max:

They're now rarely found in thread budget, which is perhaps a surprise but rarity helps. The V8 Bike Bus thread in RR is excellent (if that's the one you mean), showing both basic/ ordinary maintenance, and what can be done if you want to fiddle. Nice colour that one too. I think a standard Mk1 X5 has passed through the chav phase and is now a good looking, and not overly large car at all. You should get it.

Eta surprised this model is so close to thread... Strong miles, and with have big tax, but I suspect the interior is quite a bit better than the Mk1 (?)

Lack of basic prep from a dealer is unforgivable and it lets that one down certainly. Not sure what’s going on with the leather on the steering wheel or could just be how it’s photographed?

A good clean would work wonders.

I’ve sporadically fleeted with these and don’t think I’ve ever seen a 600 that wasn’t black or silver.

That’s the thread I was thinking of Macron - love what he did with it overall but a standard one would suit me fine.

The later 4.8 you linked is a bit of a different animal I think, not really the ‘M’ derived bus of the predecessor. I wouldn’t feel too hard done by at around thread max though to be fair.

Thanks! Shortlist is:

2004 onwards CLK 320 Avantgarde (not really a barge but I have a soft spot for them)
E38 728i of any guise.
X350 V6 although the suspension is a bit scary.
Not another E39.
Maybe a W140 320 although I'm not sure they aren't a bit slab sided. Also don't appear to be any out there.

Budget is half thread or thereabouts so I'm not spoilt for choice. It needs to be refined, and able to achieve 25-30 mpg. Not too much too ask!

I'm not sure RE the screens, all I know is that the screen in mine is the same as in that car. It is also easy to upgrade the infotainment system to a pretty good system which allows Android (or Apple) integration. I have it so I can stream media via bluetooth to my car stereo, and can change the tracks etc that are playing on my phone using the steering wheel buttons. Also has google maps for navigation, which are much better than the ancient system/maps pre-loaded of course.

That's too good to be true. I can't imagine that's a genuine ad. Fisher than a tuna factory in Grimsby.

I think the way prices have been going I think £2500 or so for an E38 728i might be pushing it a bit. Crazy to think that's roughly what I sold mine for back in 2014 I think.
