Stuck it in the Mercedes section, but thought I'd ask here too: I want a detachable towbar for my s124, by they seem to be hard to get hold of. If anyone knows of one I'd appreciate a heads-up.

If you just want the bit that detaches, I have two. If you want the whole shebang, try German eBay for a genuine or Oris kit. The aftermarket kits look a bit shonky to me.

Thanks! Shortlist is:

2004 onwards CLK 320 Avantgarde (not really a barge but I have a soft spot for them)
E38 728i of any guise.
X350 V6 although the suspension is a bit scary.
Not another E39.
Maybe a W140 320 although I'm not sure they aren't a bit slab sided. Also don't appear to be any out there.

Budget is half thread or thereabouts so I'm not spoilt for choice. It needs to be refined, and able to achieve 25-30 mpg. Not too much too ask!
S320 3k, slabby but lovely.

Good MOT history on that too. Only failures for bulbs etc the last couple of years.

DO IT!

Not sure of this is expensive or not for an old XJ.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/89229841...

But given who the owner is (Scottish media chap, former motoring journalist) I'd imagine its been well looked after. Its also very low mileage.

It does look smart. I fear falling for a car in an advert and then mine not selling though, and it all is down to my car selling first. Budget could be near thread max but I want a slush fund!

Slightly over thread but this is tempting. Are these especially potentially ruinous?

Pedestrian impact sensors can (and do) fail if they haven't already been replaced (£96-ish each) and best to avoid deep potholes, though very rare hitting a pothole or a speed bump at a fair lick can trigger the ped impact system (they cheapened out and didn't include the fibre optic loop the XK has). The valley pipe has a tendency to get brittle with age and the supercharger makes it a pain to replace, general procedure is to remove the supercharger (though it is do-able... ish... without having to remove it but it's a right PITA) that aside engine-wise is fairly robust.

The rest I can't comment on, though if I needed a saloon these would be on the list alongside an XJ.

Defo ticks the "interesting" box, the outside is OK, the inside doesn't hide the Nissan basics too well.

It's nearly a decade younger than an LS600, but which would you have mon ami?

Does the LS600 have the mark levinson premium audio? Good audio system is a must for me. I say this despite having a nicely average standard 90’s BMW one..

You're doing well. I was checking the oil on my Skoda today and just wondered what I'd do if one of the LED headlights fails. Short answer - take it to a man and have my trousers pulled down. Almost nothing on this car is serviceable in minutes. Urgh.
One of the matrix LED headlights died in my MX5 when it was a couple of months old. It was fixed under warranty but the part was in excess of £700 + VAT eek
I did not need to read this laugh

In about 15 years a failed headlight will make my car uneconomical to repair. Madness really.

This is not in budget but I’m posting simply to share the excellence of the rear cabin and armrest of joy. I hadn’t realised these came in a ‘long’ version with the fixed tv screen between the seats. Shiatsu function on said seats too.

If the exterior were dark blue and the interior pale leather it would be a beauty.

Remaining stubbornly well above budget these.

My dream barge
An incredible car.

£11k for a 10yr old 200k motor does seem a bit steep though.

Who would but that? Only a limo business surely? Is in a few years?

Pretty much all of them do (460 and 600). It is a good sound system, but I have heard better. The sound system in my old man's old F13 M6 (I think it was Bang and Olufsen) was markedly better. Was about a £5k option, mind. It is easily better than any standard stereo you'll have in just about any other car though.

Ah, but by then there will be a ready supply of good secondhand lamps coming from cars that have been written off for a different ridiculous reason!
