Thanks! Shortlist is:

2004 onwards CLK 320 Avantgarde (not really a barge but I have a soft spot for them)
E38 728i of any guise.
X350 V6 although the suspension is a bit scary.
Not another E39.
Maybe a W140 320 although I'm not sure they aren't a bit slab sided. Also don't appear to be any out there.

Budget is half thread or thereabouts so I'm not spoilt for choice. It needs to be refined, and able to achieve 25-30 mpg. Not too much too ask!
S320 3k, slabby but lovely.

Good MOT history on that too. Only failures for bulbs etc the last couple of years.

DO IT!
That is a very good price for one of these and with a relatively low mileage and a modern looking colour. I also think (but don't know) that a lot of stuff was standard on these later cars that you wouldn't find on earlier six cylinder cars.
If contacted the seller, just to get some more info. But I don't want to get too involved as I still have an old Mercedes parked out front!
If you can go from a 190E to a W140 for around £1k I think you'll have done very well!

Indeed, I have no idea if prices will crash post Covid, but at this rate I'm quickly becoming priced out of a lot of interesting cars. I can't think of the last time I saw a decent E39, E38, W140 on the roads.

They're all getting pretty old now to be fair. For most people they are nice enough but when you can jump into a newer car for not much £ per month, a car that has all of the luxuries and a lot more then for the majority of people these old barges make little sense.

I suspect the prices will drop, but it makes no real odds. If you sell your car for more then you have more to play with. I was tempted to see if I could get £7500-8000 for my LS460, a fair bit more than what I paid, but then I'd need more than I otherwise would to buy another car, so it makes no odds.
