I've been a passenger in one of these and I thought that it was a lovely thing to sit in. They do seem great value for money as well for what you get. I'd swerve this one, but I'd love one none the less.

I love the vendor's rather hopeful 'see you soon!' at the end of the advert smile

I was surprised it needed welding for MOT last year as it's normally in a dry, carpeted garage and hasn't been out in snow in at least 15 years. At least the work was carried out at a reputable Jaguar specialist so should be good.
Often if a car is stored in an unventilated garage, especially if put away whilst wet, they'll rot like crazy.
The garage is well ventilated and dry. It had stood on the lawn for a while before going back in. Rarely used and not normally put in when wet.

In bad weather Dad would use the 405 or in the last decade his Skoda.

FIL had one in V6 form. All I remember was that it was like a reverse Tardis & felt smaller inside than it looked outside.

Nice cars but not this one. The lowering is enough to make me look elsewhere regardless of condition, let alone anything else.

I spoke to my mate the Jag restoration specialist this morning and mentioned that this XJ8 was shed of the week . Usually any article featuring an XJ signals another jump in prices of the good ones . He still won't be selling any of his, he has 8 XJRs of various types , they are the nearest thing he has to a pension plan . This thing looks like a parts donor at half the price.

Too many negatives as noticed on here. I like “classics” but this is just an old car. In view of Jag’s image as old man/golf club car ,not that I agree with the stereotype, there must be some nice unmolested, fsh. ,low mileage ones out there for not much more.

Storage of a vehicle on a lawn/grass of any kind is a bad scene for corrosion which is why farm vehicles are often rusty for their age. Rather sad story that poster’s father assumed he was doing the right thing.

Interesting choice of a shed! Given the list of issues and the potential to throw up large bills (or at least in comparison to what it costs to buy), it seems more like a brave pill!

One car that doesnt suit being lowered, they are sort of low anyway, just looks wrong.

Sort of the inverse of a MK3 MX5.
That example looks too low, but think they can benefit from a slight height reduction.

Here's my '99 XJR, which had some suspension work done at a reputable classic Jaguar specialist a few years back.
Still has the XJ comfort, wheels fill the arches a little better.
On the 17" X300 Jaguar Sport wheels here, rather than the original 18" Pentas.

Disarmingly handsome enough to let the devil on one shoulder talk louder than the angel on the left. They were and still are such a thing of beauty to behold and worth saving IMHO.

I loved my XJR that I owned for 2 years.
Surprised nobody has mentioned saggy roof lining and PITA coils yet though!

I sold a fairly tidy 4.0 V8 a few years ago for barely more than that.

Lovely thing but I had to fix lots of rust (none visible on outside) and the whole cam chain tensioner system (lowers aswell) which left me little change out of 2 grand! It was a nikasil engine yet there were no problems with that issue. Mine didn't really need anything doing yet only got £1400.
The 4 litres are better in that they are faster yet use barely any more fuel than a 3.2, and were much rarer as they cost a lot more when new.

They are lovely things and generally won't leave you stranded but WILL chuck up a large bill every year. As others have said, buy the nicest you can find and look for everything to have been done to it.

I thought it too quiet for a V8, if I'm shoving that much petrol into the best engine configuration then I want to hear it a bit.

Back in the mid 2000s I used to get picked up occasionally in one of these for trips to or from Heathrow and it felt so much more special than the usual German options.

Jaguar always managed to make a car ride and handle well, and the way they put leather, wood and carpet together in their interiors is just fantastic.

I'd love to own one some day, but as many have already said just not this one! laugh

Same here. Picked up by a luxury taxi firm.

Lexus was serene, so serene, all you can hear is the squeaky on the tight fit leather on the dash.
S Class Merc was floating on a carpet.
Jaguar felt special. I sat in the front, it seemed wasted sitting in the back. However I did notice the harder suspension. I wouldn't want that suspension any harder.

Love these XJs - last of the 'proper' Jags.

Had so many over the years, in fact most iterations part from the X300 V12 version.

X308 is definitely a smoother, more refined car compared to the X300. But the 'AJ16' is a much simpler and more durable unit.

Get a well-sorted one of these, and there genuinely aren't many cars which will touch it for the ride, comfort and handling. They truly do have a unique feel to them.

This doesn't look too bad lowered - but it won't help the handling and will ruin the XJ magic. In addition, too many other things wrong to warrant that price.

For this money, you will get a much nicer example which hasn't been bothered.

Good cars for the SOTW, just not this actual one.

I'll be picking up a '98 3.2 Sport in a few weeks, finished in BRG, less than 100k miles and good history. A bit less than this example. Looking forward to some wafting!
