I had a 3.2 sport, decent old car, but rusty wings all round. Had two series three 4.2s, a car from a different era, and all the nicer for it. Later bought a Lexus LS400 and it was different league to any of the barges I had owned, and, whisper it, an e39 bmw is a much more resolved car than the x306/8. Yes they have their problems but I sometimes wonder if a more comprehensively designed and well engineered car was ever available to the public at the e39s price point. A 520 is as well made as a 540 and they just feel solid.
