RE: The best fast estates to buy in 2020
Discussion
I think that's a pretty good selection really, although Volvo and BMW are conspicuous by their absence. My "fast estate" was a "blobeye" Impreza WRX Wagon and in all fairness, it's more of a big hatchback really, the Legacy is probably a better estate but the WRX more fun? A Forester XT for 5k would also be an option though?
You could probably get a decent Volvo V70R for 10k-15k, although the Focus ST/Octavia vRS are probably lower risk options and very good if you want something newer for your money. I love the B7 RS4 Avant but it sits in that strange nomansland where it's possibly a bit too old/nice to use as a daily driver but maybe not "special" enough to use as a weekend car? I think that they're actually pretty decent value right now but for this reason, I'd go with a B8 RS4 for that money instead.
The new E63 (and most new Mercedes) don't do it for me personally. For me, an Alpina B5 Touring would be a more exclusive and special car. Not keen on the Panamera but the Ferrari FF is fabulous and if you buy from a Ferrari dealer, don't they come with a lengthy servicing/warranty package now, so not as expensive as you might think to run other than insurance and fuel?

How do the E500 owners find the cars' ride over speed bumps/cushions etc?
I'd love an E63 as the family bus (but the wife hates estates) but the firm ride would probably grate during the day-to-day stuff (while being absolutely awesome when gunning to the holiday destination ).
E63 is smooth as a babies... in comfort mode, has the air suspension. BTW, the 63 is my wife’s!I'd love an E63 as the family bus (but the wife hates estates) but the firm ride would probably grate during the day-to-day stuff (while being absolutely awesome when gunning to the holiday destination ).

It staggers me that if you want a new traditional fast estate (E63/RS6) you're talking 6 figure numbers.
Why, you can spec a 320d to £50K Noslek said:

In the softest 'comfort' mode and fully raised, it just lolls around town, rolling over bumps and lumps and humps. A big plus is the 17" alloys with a 45 profile to a 265 width; iirc the AMGs were either 19" or 20". The E500 is an awesome 'do everything' car and a measly 300bhp is a really suitable power output for covering ground at speed. It's a total sleeper. As the V8 revs at 2,750rpm at 105mph, which I find is a sweet spot for the M113 5L (in seventh gear), it's relaxing too.
EDIT: Mine has seven seats too

How many of these can get three child seats across the back? I’m guessing 5er and E-class?
Isofix? The F10/11 certainly cannot by a long way. Bryans69 said:
It has to be a three row one though. SUVs in themselves are not really any bigger than the 'equivelant' estate. Although everyone I know with three kids has gone for an MPV.
Yep, and then they find they need two roof boxes when taking the tribe on holiday because there is next to no boot space, unlike a decent estate. Btw, two roof boxes = 1 for the luggage, 1 for the step ladder to load/unload the luggage. Noslek said:

Rubbish I have over 900 ltrs with the middle row all in isofix. Which estate gives 3 isofix in the middle row? I’d love to know as a 5 series doesn’t come close to offering 3 isofix.
