Methinks you may be over-egging the pudding a touch there...?
GTi was OK, there are better options though if you just want an old car for the grin-factor. mk1 mx5 for a start always gave me a lot more enjoyment in all situations than I ever got from the 205.
My sincere apologies, I'm clearly hugely mistaken. Back in 1989 when I passed my driving test, it was actually the MX5 that I lusted after, and not the 205 GTi 1.9. Silly me, how dare I have my opinion, memories or desire. I guess I better stick it on eBay and look for a Mk1 MX5 instead..... though as I also already have a 944 S2 Cabrio (which I also lusted after in 1989: the 205 being the 'attainable' dream car - the Porker being the 'aspirational'), I'm not sure how much I'm going to enjoy it. But hey, who am I to argue with someone who clearly knows me better than I know myself. Again, apologies for having a preference for something else. Cheers.GTi was OK, there are better options though if you just want an old car for the grin-factor. mk1 mx5 for a start always gave me a lot more enjoyment in all situations than I ever got from the 205.
Morning I had the 1.6 and 1.9 and I must confess the 1.6 was more fun as it had some play in it! I had a go in a 1.9 about a year ago and was very disappointed but maybe that was due to owning a Clio200 RS at the time it just seemed slow. I was lucky enough to have an L Reg Clio Williams it was by far the most rewarding car I've owed.

The thing is, while it is a lovely idea, and speaks volume for the high regard these cars are still held, would you actually trust Peugeot to do this ?
Like, it is not really their area of expertise. They are set up to mass produce cars from scratch on a production line, where everyone does their little bit and the car moves to the next station on a conveyor belt. They know as much about car restoration as I do about brain surgery. And I cannot imagine there will be anyone left who worked on the original cars ?
Beside the supposed cache, I suspect you would be far better going to a specialist who knows what they are doing.
I think its safe to assume psa heritage will know everything there is to know about the cars they built! I'm sure there will be plenty of guys there who worked on them at the time (they will have also been built on a 'conveyor belt' too) and even more who probably restore them in their own time or run their own resto businesses.Like, it is not really their area of expertise. Nice that Peugeot are getting involved in this. I had a 309 GTI as my first car (wanted a 205 but could not get insured) and more recently had a 106 rallye which I ended up selling as it became a pain getting parts for it.
Audi could do with something like this as they are really poor at not maintaining parts for past models once they pass 10 years out of production.
I think Porsche and BMW are much better in that respect.

You’d hope the cars were round enough for that to be the case. JLR have had a real problem with their restorations as they’ve had to ask a bunch of confused and belligerent old men about key parts that those blokes have spent a lifetime re-writing the history of.
It’s amazing just how quickly people store their version as fact and then promote it for decades. You just have to hope Peugeot have good written records because you categorically don’t want to be relying on old employees and the loudest talking club members.

I had the 309Gti too Not the ‘looker’ the 205 was .....but I also remember the insurance being a group less than the 205 as well. Partly as I was all set to get a 205 until I drove the 309
Even the journos liked it
Re the guy above who preferred his GTi over the MX5 of the time, I have to agree.
The 2-seater I thought was really good was the revvy steam iron, the Mk1 MR2. If I’d had a 2-seater I would have picked that over the contemporary MX5
Must make a start on resurrecting my 205. It's been sitting forlornly in my garage for a couple of years now.
One thing is for sure - prices for the new parts won't be cheap. I'd to use them to source a gearknob for my 104 last year as completely unobtainable elsewhere and it was the wrong side of 40 euros for some not-very-well-made plastic.

The rose tints are strong with this one.
They're fairly terrible. The golf gti was miles better. Even the uno turbo was a better steer. All imo (from experience of all 3) of course. Ymmv.

Wouldn’t have said either were terrible though so maybe I had good ones

You must've had a pretty bad one then if you think they're terrible, even my 180k 1.6 GTI was still a right laugh to drive. A very unpopular opinion is that I found my MK4 Fiesta 1.25 to be a much better steer with a better engine and better gearbox, overall I thought the Fiesta was actually more fun to drive. But the 205 GTI is far from terrible They're fairly terrible.
