RE: 2021 BMW M5 Competition | UK Review

That is lovely, but doesn't look as aggressive s the previous model, IMO.
And I agree with what others have said - the instrument cluster isn't great on these. Recently had a brand new E Class as a loan car from when my CLS was in for a recall, and the MBUX digital dash is much better.

I admire the power, engineering and performance and it is certainly a very desirable car. But....................
I don't really see the appeal in the UK. How much faster would this be on UK roads than say a 530d or a 540i? The running costs will be huge as will the depreciation (even with a large discount).
Lovely colour though.
I know this always comes up in each thread but it's just about knowing you have the best 5 series. It's like a watch which you wear diving 300 metres or wear in space. It's like having a diamond because you know it's the hardest natural material on earth.I don't really see the appeal in the UK. How much faster would this be on UK roads than say a 530d or a 540i? It's the same reason why someone owns a 720S instead of a 540C McLaren, even though you can't really use that performance on roads in this country.

E39 M5 listed at around £60K fifteen or so years ago. There was a price cut at the end of the run but still a very expensive car back then.

E39 wasn't on sale 15 years ago. Love the E39 M5, and thoroughly miss mine. One of the few cars I genuinely regret selling. Last of the mechanical M5s.

There are a few about, and Hexagon Classics were selling one a couple of years ago. IIRC, it was around £35k.

That price seems a bit low for Hexagon, sure you didn't miss a zero off the end? Love the E39 M5, and thoroughly miss mine. One of the few cars I genuinely regret selling. Last of the mechanical M5s.
I put 160k on mine in the 12 years I owned it. If I had managed a big lottery win I would've sent it back to BMW for a total rebuild I thought that highly of it.

I have a 19 reg as my daily drive. Its epic or docile, its up to you. It is though a 5 series so the interior is not the best (certainly is not as nice a place to be as my previous RRS) but that is far from a deal breaker as when I looked at the then competition 18 months ago it was the nicest of the lot (the new RS6 seems to be nice from the pics though). It also gets 22mpg in daily local driving and has seen low 30s on the motorway. Its a bit souless though and is probably best as a daily driver than something where you expect to get out of it with a huge grin on your face. I genuinely think it is too fast for the road for that. so much so I bought a 50 year old classic which barely gets to 80, drinks fuel at such a rate you can watch the dial drop and bangs and crashes on local roads. but it makes me feel happy and I think I am starting to understand that that is just so much more important than whether it does 0-60 in 4 secs or 3.8secs.
Well said! The best car period of my life consisted of a cheap daily and a really fun car for the weekends! Fun > outright performance.Taylor James said:

Love the idea of this, and I’d take great delight in screaming up and down outside Theta Gruntburgers yurt whilst creating my own hole in the ozone layer.
But the reality is, even where I live on the edge of The Peak District, o wouldn’t be able to use the speed and power most of the time. And I’m not a great enough driver to get it anywhere near 10/10’s or even 8/10’s
So I’d rather have this and stick £50k in the bank..

I get to use all 510hp on pretty much every journey. But the reality is, even where I live on the edge of The Peak District, o wouldn’t be able to use the speed and power most of the time. Those that say you can't have simply never tried.
It’s a lovely thing in the photos, engine and straight line drivetrain is simply epic, even the seats are nice but as a daily, it’s not much smaller than an oil tanker, the thought of driving it around town and trying to park the thing gives me the shakes.
These cars used to be the company car directors go-to choice along with the RS6 avant but these days i think i that market has disappeared in the UK and BMW are having to chase 911 Carrera numbers hoping that they can bag a few family owners.
It’s not BMWs fault but the saloon car power war has transformed the M5 into something that you can’t really compute but you really try hard to justify it because the engineering is sublime.
£65k = Yes, it’s a no brainier
£118k = No, i’ll lose less money betting on blackjack.
At least the kids and the dog fit though right dads?

Yeah, I'd have a 911 Turbo if it was £75k, and the Ferrari F8 if it was under £90k.These cars used to be the company car directors go-to choice along with the RS6 avant but these days i think i that market has disappeared in the UK and BMW are having to chase 911 Carrera numbers hoping that they can bag a few family owners.

As for being too big to drive and park....it's a 5-series. It's not a LWB S-Class or an Escalade. Have a word with yourself...!!
