I don't do many miles so no bragging rights but two family members between them did around 600k using 3 cars:
160k in a 1.6 Civic
+200k in an E36 318is
197k in a CLK 320

All of the above were n/a petrol engines, only the clk was auto, other two manuals. One key point to note, they were driven by medics and well maintained with no expenses spared. If things needed fixing it was done as was servicing etc.
I think the maintenance aspect is sometimes overlooked, even brands with less than exemplary reliability records will keep going if correctly maintained.

Some four cylinder engines are getting wound up to 300hp or more. That's a lot of power to squeeze out of a small unit that also has to run hot in order to meet emissions. It doesn't come as a surprise that they're not lasting as long as they used to.
Yes indeed! I have a 1.6 with 270bhp.....I make sure the manufacurer warranty is renewed every year for sure.
I would say generally these high power small engines are range topping cars so worth a fair amount and a engine death isn't a write off.

Things like a 1.0 eco boost fiesta however I can’t imagine would ever be worth fixing.

My Brera is a 1750 TBI and has done 136,000 and it’s a fabulous machine. I love it.

Great looking car.
Thanks. I love it.

It attracts a fair amount of attention and interest from people. It's a keeper this one as it's a well sorted car regardless of the miles.

A great thread and an interesting read smile which prompted me to check on my Dad's old Bentley Turbo RL, off topic as he does not own the car anymore.

Purchased the car in 1993 and on the day of the sale in July 2018 the odometer showed 196,707 miles (Dad was the second owner and covered 180,000 of the total mileage).

I carried out a DVLA MOT Check this afternoon and am delighted to see the owner is heading closer to 200,000.

MOT (pass) carried out 29/10/2020 @ 199,203 miles.

1990 944 S2.
209,000 miles.
The engine seems fine. These need a bit of maintenance on the camchain tensioners over the hears, maybe every 25-30k so I won't pretend it's never been touched. But it's never been rebuilt, 3 or 4 cambelts over the years and a lot of maintenance, but it's still a good motor.

I once worked out that I spent £14k on fuel over ~80k...that was on a mere 2.0i Mondeo however so rough back of a fag packet calculation with about half the avg mpg over 200k gives about £70k in fuel.

Nice, I have a few of those. Working on them is a giant pain in the rear. I can't imagine that the heads have not come off in all this time.

Having a chat with a mechanic and he mentioned that if my petrol engine made it to 200K miles that would be exceptional and I am very lucky.

He expected the big end or piston seals to fail on a petrol car by then.

So was curious if anyone has reached this milestone and if so what major engine work was required.

I know in other threads there are mega mile diesel hence the focus on petrol.
My Calibra Turbo went past 200,000 miles in my ownership, and was still on the road years after I sold it. AWD system, turbo, clutch and engine were all original and untouched and there were no signs of wear or loss of performance.

200K miles on a clutch? That car must have lived on the motorway.

If driven with mechanical sympathy, I see no reason why a clutch shouldn't last well beyond that.

It was a old fashioned single mass flywheel design they last for ages. My Land Rover hasn't had a replacement clutch since the mid 70s, before I was born (my dad is the previous owner).

Yes I've not noticed any perceptible change in height of my clutch pedal at 210k. My commute is A roads and a bit of town and village, quite rarely go on motorways.

How about 307k miles in a 560SEC? Owned from I think about 70k miles

Engine and gearbox are fine, as quick as ever, but 2 comprehensive body work restorations...
