Track and road evaluation

Look at the consolidated road outcome ... the best by a margin ... and better then a 992 911 on track ?

Strange EVO (ECOTY) just placed the M2CS 1st and 765LT 2nd. This Yaris was 4th overall.
The M2 is 2x the price and the LT about 5x the price, so not bad for a cheap Toyota hatchback.

It looks like the GR Yaris is the giant slayer for 2000 ... the M2CS in the wet was a handful on PSCup2's ... it should therefore be be better and sharper in the dry .. chassis for chassis.

PS4S are good, but not Cup2 good.

But I'll bet the GR Yaris wins on suspension travel and traction for when the daily drive gets sticky !

M2CS must have the GT4 in it's sights ...

Hi I,m new here. I’d ordered a white Yaris GR on the back of many professional motoring journalists reviews. Last week I took a test drive at vertu Toyota in Chesterfield. I new it would be a good car and was not disappointed. I set it in track mode and it never stepped out of line in the wet cruddy roads. Traction is amazing, brakes are amazing. I new the tyres are great I’ve had them before on a golf r.
I’ve had many performance cars over the years including caterhams and now a Lotus Exige which I only use on good weather days in the winter.
One of the reviews the driver states that on B roads, damp conditions the Yaris gr will be as quick as a GT3 911. I totally agree with this though my test drive was only 20 mins and the fuel light came on 2 miles up the road so i didn’t get to fully explore the car.
I look forward to getting my Yaris in March/April and getting some track time.

Had a very enjoyable 30 mins driving one on Saturday, on a joint test drive with a mate who has put a deposit down.

Perfect conditions for it really - raining, puddles, country lanes: levels of grip were amazing. Certainly a lot more than the near 30 year old NSX with too-old-rear-tyres-I-really-must-replace, that I drove there in anyway.

Steering is light but weights up, clutch bite point very high, and car had 24 miles on it so think gearbox needed to loosen up a bit. Easy to get 4th instead of 2nd, 3rd instead of 1st. Driving position was great, but of course high - but it's a hatch. Had no issue with the interior quality at all - and suprisingly there was rear leg room. Salesman was a big lad maybe 6'4", but i could have got my legs in behind his seat had I not sat sideways when mate had his go. I'm 6'2".

Sounds better than I thought - a nice induction roar, and that "air cooled porsche" sound at lower RPM. Some more old school turbo lag as well - but don't mind that at all.

And it's very fast. 3 up, and probably 300kg of bloke it in, and it was rapid. The other two made up 215kg of that, so on my own would have felt way quicker than its 0-60 suggests am sure.

One minor worry was lane departure warning. It kept chirping, despite pressing the button on the wheel, and turning off in the menus. Maybe it was user error, but seemed like it might be a warranty issue, as we did try for a while to stop it.

I went wondering if i could find a way to squeeze it into the car plan as a daily, but ultimately it isn't quite right for me. My current daily is so cheap to run, and wife is happy to get the Alpine next year once we have space on the drive (builders..); whilst you can't compare two different classes of cars one 10-20k more whether used or new, I can as they're my two options. And it's the ride of the Alpine i loved so much - just glides over bumps, wheras the Yaris has a very busy ride especially in town. 45 litre fuel tank won't get you far either - we got 15.6mpg across our hour, although fair to say we weren't hanging about!

Mega car, think from my 30 mins the hype is real - maybe one day i'll work out the manmaths to get onboard too.

Different testers different opinions. What is consistent is the mclaren and the Toyota and there’s 1 of them I can afford.
That is, as always, very true

The Toyota looks a fantastic buy and is, for the majority of people, the only affordable car

I held the steering wheel Lane departure button down for a few seconds and the icon disappeared from the dash.

I thought I was doing well at 20mpg on my test drive!

Fair enough - i did hold it down for 2-3 seconds, but maybe needed a little longer.

and yep - fair to say the first 24 miles the car did were probably a lot easier than the 40 odd that followed it at 15.6mpg smile It's supposed to be driven fast i figure..!

eCoty had better (drier) conditions so that would have gone against the Yaris. I’m sure it’d have been further up the leaderboard otherwise. Shows you can’t have a car that’s best in all circumstances, but I’ll take the Yaris for all year UK roads.

Also thought interesting in the table that two testers rated the Ariel top, two rated the Yaris top and only one the McLaren.... It’s a bit like popular vote vs electoral college 🤣

I also thought it was interesting that 3 ranked the Civic higher than the Yaris. But only just.

I always take it as pretty much any car in the final stage of ECOTY is a decent car and it comes down to fine margins.

The Civic certainly seemed to get better comments than the Yaris in the ECOTY article but some stated they just couldn't handle the looks which may have impacted the overall score.

But with the decals removed that becomes a plus for the GRMN ... I agree that the Civic is very shouty ... especially in the yellow (all sold !)

On roads like this its quicker than any 911 I've had. Suspension control is first rate

I have a test drive this Sunday! Can't wait!! it is a toss up between this and the Alpine A110 at the moment

Only problem i don't want to sell my Mini GP1 but pressure is mounting from she who must be obeyed!! I might have to hide it and lie

I think the my heart wants an Alpine but my head/wallet a Yaris!! I also think it will be my daily drive which is around 16-18k a year, so might suit the Toyota better, particularly the 5 year warranty and 100k miles

The Alpine does kill it for looks though!

Don’t forget the Toyota will be 3 services a year at that mileage although they aren’t exactly pricey.

Currently have a 992 Turbo S which am still getting to grips with but is biblically fast, more suited to A roads than the back roads in the picture - so GR more fun there. Prior to that had a GT3 which is more of any 'event' anywhere!

There are cars that get you from A to B at various speeds and there are cars you actively go out for the drive - GR in the Peak is in the latter camp

Anyone know what the service schedule on a GR is or how often things like the diffs need oil changing/associated cost?
