Top Gear: "The GR Yaris is superb - the best Toyota we've ever driven." 10 out of 10.

Autocar: "All-paw Yaris might be the most exciting addition to the hot hatchback market in a decade. Wickedly purposeful, and wonderfully evocative of fast 4x4s of old." 5 stars out of 5. (Car is also the cover star of the print edition and across six pages inside).

EVO: "A true homologation superstar - Toyota's new road-going rally special is a great drivers' car of the type we worried we'd never see again. It's a little gem." 5 stars out of 5.

The Daily Telegraph:"This sensational special project takes the hot hatchback crown". 5 stars out of 5.

Auto Express: "Look beyond the price because the Toyota GR Yaris is no ordinary Yaris. Instead it's a car that will be written about and cherished by enthusiasts for many years to come." 4.5 stars out of 5.

Pistonheads: "Christmas has come early. It's brilliant!" (Pistonheads does not awards stars or scores).

Complete Car: "Toyota, with almost no back catalogue to call upon in the hot hatchback department previously, dangles the H-bomb of 'homologation' in front of us and then delivers a performance three-door for the ages in the blistered, brilliant form of the GR Yaris. Buckle up for what must surely be one of the most sublime on-road fast cars of recent years - size irrespective." 5 stars out of 5.

Motoring Research / Yahoo! News / (this will also appear on the huge-audience MSN Cars in the coming hours): "Toyota took its next WRC race car, then made it road legal. The result is the bespoke and ballistic GR Yaris - our hot hatchback of the year." (MR does not award stars or scores).

Yes Auto (video): "It really does feel like a very special car and they're only making a few thousand of these so jump on it, because once they're gone, they're gone. Such exploitable, accessible performance! It's just...very, very, very good. It's really special." (YA does not award stars or scores).

DriveTribe (video): "One of the most special cars I've driven in the last three years. It's phenominal! Yes I know I've spoiled the entire video by telling you it's good, but...just look at it!" (DT does not award stars or scores).

Johnny Smith's Late Brake Show (video): "I've got to be honest, I think it's going to be a classic as soon as it comes out because of the lengths they've gone to to make this so faithful as a road-rally car. You're buying a car that's rally-bred. I really love it." (JS does not award stars or scores).

I've loved the idea of this since it was announced and all the reviews i've read/ seen this morning cement that love.

Hats off, i'm not the guy to go and buy one but will certainly love seeing them around and hopefully might manage a go in one at some point!

I love that and would have one in a flash - I see I am not only one a bit surprised at the asking price? I was surprised at how expensive a fully loaded with every option ticked VW GTI PP back in 2016 at £36k+ you could get a 6-7k discount from memory 5k discount from list and 2k discount for taking VW finance. This would be such a nice run around for the kids (ie me smile) but fair amount of money for admittedly a mean and very cool looking mini beasty.

Looks fun, but I’m not sure at 32-33k.
Civic type R GT seems a to be more car around that price, I think.
The problem always will be the civics looks.

I have a Yaris on order (circuit pack, red) but last night was running through pictures of the competition to the non petrol head Mrs. Civic - “woahhh that’s a big spoiler” “is that positive or negative?” “Well I’d have to explain to everyone why it’s that big all the time! So negative” - and that is probably the most complementary comment you’ll find about a civics looks.
Yes, the civic’s looks are very marmite. You can get the toned down version now though without the giant wing which helps with the embarrassment!
I’m thinking the Yaris would definitely be the choice as the fun second car of course, with the civic probably being the choice as an only all round car.

Obviously, the Yaris will be fine running about as a daily too but you’d sort of feel it was being wasted schlepping up and down a motorway. Having said that if you live in the middle of wales or a lot of your daily runs are around town it would be a winner!

Interesting note about the 'oversized' front air intake - it's for optimum engine cooling. Obvious, you might think. Yet, it's a concept that clearly never occurred to the designers of the current Civic Type-R hehe
Oh thank god for that, you’ve not had a pop at the civic for ages even on civic threads, thought w’ed lost you...

Love it. Part of me wishes it looked a bit more bonkers, maybe a roof spoiler or wing.

The Yaris is also the better all-year car because of AWD. You have to be a bit more careful with the go-fast pedal in the Type R once it's not dry tarmac we are talking about.

That applies to pretty much any new car though.
Fully agree. The one in my Focus failed last year, and that one didn't control anywhere near as many things as these latest ones do.

its completely different to anything else currently available within the sector.

This is true of all new cars, the info screen thing failed in my Lexus GS last year - it was a £5.5k job to mend it. Luckily I had the Lexus extended warranty, which turned out to be the best £1000 i've ever spent!

Onto the Yaris, absolutely love that thing, was seriously considering chopping in the Tesla for one of these as my last fling with an ICE, then I scrolled through the photos and only two seats in the back. An instant fail when you're a family of 5! Such a shame for me, but what an awesome, individual piece of kit.
Well done Toyota.

Compare this to a GTI though, come on. This is a serious rally rep, if someone picks a Golf GTI over this at a similar price point then I think Mumsnet is more up their alley. I'd honestly pick this over any of the German 4wd hyper hatches as well, even if someone offered to give me the money to buy whichever I chose.

Just a shame Ford won't make a Fiesta RS with the power bumped up to Stage 1 levels (250-260bhp) and the GKN AWD system to compete with this. Would be like a modern Evo vs Scooby

Obviously as enthusiasts we absolutely love this, but do we actually think that it will sell well to the wider audience? Or will the sales to the enthusiasts be enough for Toyota.

I don't think it'll sell to mainstream buyers. People buying new at this price point are usually buying as a couple or for a daily/family hack and I don't think they'll go for this over a C Segment hot hatch that has more practicality and better standard equipment plus more nameplate recognition in that segment.

People who get one will be people who really want one.

Just spoke to a dealer and been advised that you have to order on line and the car will be delivered to your local dealer.
In addition he said numbers are going to be limited in UK, surely limited numbers will only be on the first batch.

Anyone had similar info from dealer or is this incorrect.

Article said "it's a wonder that Toyota doesn't allow you to sit lower in the GR. Instead, it has raised the gear level by 50mm"

If they were going to make this as bespoke as they have, why don't they pay attention to the absolute basics! Infuriating.

The interior looks utter pants - it looks like I made those pedals - and my OCD could not live with the wonky gear stick surround.

I'm out.
