I suspect the Mondeo is a bit like the Focus in that the original was the sweetest handling and each subsequent generation added a layer of size and heft. The original Mk1 petrol 2 litre only weighed about 1290KG. Dread to think what the Mk5 weighs. The Mk3 was possibly the best compromise though. I remember borrowing my neighbours to pick up a bootful of 2 metre long Ikea flat packs years ago. They had so much space those cars.

The ST's always looked fantastic but are a bit long in the tooth now. What's the best mk 4 equivalent to the mk 3 ST/ST tdci? Was there one?
Titanium X Sport maybe? The facelift version of that model looks rally good I reckon with the agressive looking splitter etc.
Yep Titanium X Sport Mk4 or Mk4.5 is the closest. However the Mondeo never got Recaros or ST tuned chassis after the Mk3.

Mk4 could be had with 2.5T 5cyl 220ps or later 2.0T Ecoboost 200ps (but Auto only frown ) and 2.2 TDCI 175ps or later 2.0 TDCi 163ps

Mk4.5 could be had with 2.0T Ecoboost (240ps) (Auto) and 2.2 TDCi 200ps or 2.0 TDCi 163ps

Did like the look of the Mk4.5 and would have probably replaced the ST TDCi with a 2.2 TDCi 200ps (or a 240ps Ecoboost, if they'd offered a manual), but needed more than 5 seats.....

(Mk5 could be had (at launch, but not now!) with 240ps Ecoboost or 210ps 2.0 TDCi, both Auto only !! - this is about when my fondness for Mondeos waned.....)

Ditto. Well with the Mk4 when it went auto-only on the petrols. I have a dislike autos, don't do enough miles to justify a diesel (and hate the way they make their power) and have utterly zero desire for an SUV/car on stilts.

The local independent dealer is currently flogging a 2014 Mk4 Mondeo 2.2 TDCI 200 Titanium X in black. Its quite strong money at £7995, but I cant help thinking a) what a handsome looking thing it is and b) what a lot of car for your buck, given that it probably retailed at close to £30K when new. Must go well with that engine under the bonnet too. The post facelift Mk4 is a good looking car IMHO.

Steel wheels did nothing for it. Made it look dowdy. Agree with others like the focus the MK1 was probably the most cutting edge.
