Surprised no-one has mentioned the cooled aswell as heated front seats. I know other cars have them but ive never experienced cooled seats quite like the mondeo, they were very impressive.
Did the ST come with cooled seats? A mate had a Ghia X with the heated/cooled seats but don't think I ever saw them in the ST. As far as I knew the options over the standard car were pretty slim? Nav, xenons and heated rear seats. "proper" Recaros too like the 220? And don't get me started on ISOFIX, that seemed to be a proper scatter gun approach to fitting. What I don't think anyone has mentioned and which was the one hugely annoying thing about the ST TDCI hatchback was the rear bumpers fell off. Some support kinda thing was inadequate which led to the bumpers sagging. Don't think it affected estates or 220s?
Not sure why people are saying transit engine. The tddi was rough but this wasn't in the ST. This had the 2.2 tdci engine which was the start of the new wave of diesels that were smooth. My ST was on an 05 plate and 2nd gear pulled far more than the figures suggest. It was a great car. Alloys peeling were common.
I have the same basic engine in my X-Type and it isn't terrible.
It has eaten EGR valves, but otherwise it's been a good engine and I'm currently sitting on 160k with it.
I had this shape Mondeo in the aforementioned 1.8LX spec a few years ago and it was a superb continental mile muncher. The spec was really good on that car, as I recall. Climate control I certainly remember having.

The best thing Ford ever did was shelve the ‘Puma’ TDCi engine as fitted to the MK3 Mondeo and replace it in the MK4 with a PSA sourced engine.
These things were dire. Sounded like a Transit. Fuel pumps, rails, injectors were all common. Head gaskets and timing chains were a regular occurrence. Clutches and DMF’s and if you were really unlucky the gearbox as well. That’s without the usual MK3 Mondeo usual issues with the rear subframe bushes, rear calipers, bonnet locks where you have to smash the grill out to open the bonnet etc etc.
Save your money and invest in a MK4 2.0 Titanium X. Much better car and nearly as quick.
Dont forget the axillary belt tensioner too. £100 a throw plus the belt. These things were dire. Sounded like a Transit. Fuel pumps, rails, injectors were all common. This thread has got me watching youtube videos and scouring eBay etc for an ST220. Performance blue estate facelift with the 6spd box... was kinda half looking for another E91 330i Touring but they seem to have become mega rare and the prices gone up. ST220 might be a budget option for a reasonably brisk load lugger...

IIRC ISOFIX was a "free" optional extra but one you had to specify. Hence the scatter gun approach on both the Mondeo and Focus.
See, if the Ford dealership we spoke to back in the day when we were looking to buy one knew this then it wouldn't have been so much of a chew! Huddersfield Ford didn't/don't know their arse from their elbow - half of the staff in there didn't know what ISOFIX even was. Pretty sure there was also something about ISOFIX points being hidden within the seat bases and you had to cut the leather to access them? Sod that... luckily we eventually found one being sold privately that had ISOFIX from the factory when he'd ordered it new.Must have just been that dealership who were rubbish. They also once tried to sell us a ltd edition Fiesta Zetec S by standing in front of me and reciting from the brochure.
Had a 05 2.2d X type with exactly the same mechanicals and took it from 20k to 130k over 9 years without one single engine, clutch or gearbox issue. Also used it to regularly tow with as well. Always well serviced, never fed supermarket fuel and driven hard. Also had a V6 petrol one before that and it was less reliable with several sensors failing over the years.
I also had one of these. Lovely to drive, but the dual mass flywheel is an utter pain as are the body skirt jacking covers which usually fall off/stolen.
Trying to find one without rotten wheels too is nigh on impossible unless they have been refurbished. Poor mpg and do like to break.
Comfortable car, but I'd never have another.
