V8 would be too big and heavy? Erm no,
An LS series would take up the same if not less space than Ford DOHC V6, it is most certainly lower and narrower with the pushrod set up, weight wise could be the same if not less.
Even a base LS3 would be a lot more powerful than this mediocre V6, & sound much better. They're also readily available as a crate package with accessories and adaptors for common trans set ups.
The 240hp V6 would be more than enough. Going ott with a V8 would just spoil the car..
I would love to put an LS V8 in a TVR but I think the V6 on offer here suits the MX5 perfectly for the UK, both in terms of our roads and the character with the charm of that top end buzz.

This has to be right up there on the temptations list. What else could you buy so light on the pocket to buy and to keep that would give that level of driving machine.

Love it. Great video too, although I'd have liked to hear a bit more of that engine revving out from in car views.

A1VDY...... the Cossy V6 is not worth going to, too expensive to rebuild and only 195 bhp (BOA). I swapped my Cossy V6 for the AJ30 in my TVR S1 last year and have 265bhp as is usual when removing all the emission equipment. Great engine and not too bad a 'box.

PH: I so much wanted to watch the video review but gave up after less than a minute. How do you expect me to listen to the commentary and hear the sound of the car over that dreadful noise?

I generally don't like to complain about PH as I think they do a sterling job overall and who cares about a few minor errors?

However, I have to say I agree with this. That awful music makes the video unwatchable. Why do it?

Oooh, I like the sound of this, not the same car or engine but I have a CatD repaired mk3 2.0 sport sat in the garage along with a spare new 3.0 Duratec lump. Putting the 2 together sounds very interesting!

Here’s how mine sounds uncorked in an ST220, they do sound great under full load, from the PH video it’s a similar tune, obviously depending on manifold and exhaust configuration.

How on earth do you run up a 70k bill on one of these?
That's what had me scratching my head. A £70k MX5? Crazy!

Easy.

When it comes to building stuff / restorations and such, it's seriously easy to blow through money.

I'd definitely like to see the 70k car though. I'd want that to be a full resto, and in as-new condition.

Is it not simpler to turbocharge or supercharge the existing engine? Surely less weight, less hassle and much cheaper, and more in keeping with the mx5 ethos?

The Jaguar engine is supposedly slightly lighter than the Mazda, aluminium vs iron, & no need to add weight with turbo or superchargers.

OK, makes sense that way. Just seems unnecessary complexity, the four pot isn't exciting but its bulletproof and I have read many articles about conversions with decent power. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people do this, and the v8 conversions in America must be huge fun also, its just not a conversion that appeals to me.

I tend to like/enjoy more than 4 cylinders...so a V6 in these really appeals to me. I do have a strong bias towards a V6 though and I've had a few of them over the years(I also currently have 2 V6's...although one is a dirty diesel though!).

I wonder whether this would fit in a mk3 MR2.
Mid-engine rear wheel drive, light weight, with that V6 screaming in the back..yes please

I think a Honda S2000 with amazing 240hp engine and weight under 1300kg would be a better proposition and £15k should buy a great example?

In a world where a Fiesta ST is £20k this really doesn’t seem all that bad. I can imagine they’re an easy ownership experience too with with endless MX5 and Jag communities and specialists around.

I wish I’d bought a kit at the start of lockdown. Would have made an enjoyable project!

The chassis is better in the MX5 imo. Though the S2000 powertrain is delightful.

Also, 200kg isn't an insignificant amount of weight!

I love the sound of the V6 but couldn't justify £15k when you can pick up a very tidy FI MX5 for a third of the price.

Because TVRs are immune to rust, aren't they?
