The NC version is currently being worked on, although I would imagine the CAN bus integration will be a bit more difficult n the platform.

I like it!

I also like a standard NA MX5 but this is very appealing.

Anyone know what seats are in the car PH tested? Usually S1 Elise seats are an easy swap but these look more like skinny Boxster seats?
They look like standard NB/FL seats that have been retrimmed and possibly had a 'foamectomy' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpS_ubaHKJE
Great, thanks for sharing :-)

I'm not that surprised that the chassis was comfortably able to take the extra power. The MX-5's basic layout with double wishbones all round was confected at the same time by much the same group of people as the 3rd gen RX-7, which is very nice with ~350hp.

Interesting, I understand the NC being a whole new platform is quite a lot stiffer, so could really bring it all together to make a great FR roadster.

I must admit I really rather like that. The MX5 is a great handling base and this gives it a brand new engine and the performance it was always missing. It’s not particularly expensive either especially given the handling and poke which you’d never find somewhere else with a new engine for the same money I think. So a fantastic niche product. Well done that man.

I bought a kit from Bruce about 2 years ago and converted my 1990 NA - absolutely love it to bits!

I have fitted a Torsen LSD, big brakes and 6 speed box from a mk2.5 Sport Donor so have mk1 looks with better running gear!

Large Want.

(to do to mine. Go on. is it about a £15k job to do?)
I haven’t (daren’t) add the cost of mine up but I reckon on top of the car (which I already owned) I spent about 11k 2 years ago - but that included the rocketeer kit, engine, mk2.5 parts, new Meisterr coilovers, bushes, wheel alignment etc etc. I did all the work myself - It was the first time I have done anything that involved but there are good instructions and a lot of support both from Bruce and now from other Rocketeers. I bought a donor mk2.5 sport and S Type Jag and sold all the bits I didn’t need which kept my costs down

I do like that engine for sure, but I'd imagine that it weighs an absolute tonne compared to the newer engines. It is definitely getting on a bit too.

True!

I'll ask my Dad if he will take the engine out of his Scorpio 24v(he's had it 26 years)...so I can put it into a MX-5! biggrin

that's a cast iron great lump of an engine - and not one with huge power either! The jag engine is much more modern and performant!

Such a pity they didn't dispatch it to Coventry and get them to re-panel it. They so nearly had a decent Boxster rival on their hands...

Love these and if we hadn’t moved to NZ would have been serious about getting one.

I think cost is subjective. A few years back I had an early 911, slightly hot rodded. That was a brilliant car to drive but cost around £70k (now possibly over £100k to get an equivalent car). That had slightly less power to weight than this Rocketeer and was great on the road. But it had zero creature comforts. This Mazda seems to offer similar levels of fun for far less outlay. Yes it doesn’t look as nice as an early 911 and wouldn’t have the unique feel but on the flip side much cheaper to maintain and also a roadster so you can enjoy wind in your hair driving.

If you think of this car as a keeper then £15k-£20k doesn’t seem like a lot of money to me.

Same for me. My 350Z Roadster I had back in 2013 was unforgettable. All it needed to be was a bit lighter and with better handling. Here is the answer.

Although to be fair, the 350Z was a great GT car, the MX5 will never be a great GT car.

I always fancied a Mk2 MR2 with the Camry V6 in it (google woodsport). I believe they can do a Mk3 with a V6 in it too.

It was a test drive in a brand new 350Z Roadster back in 2006...that really made me want a Z car of some description one day for sure. smile

My mk1 rocketeer converion is v.v.close to being finished - 6 jenvey itbs and 300 bhp. I have taken it for a brief run up the road - even with mapping and a few other things to be finished - I'm really excited about the prospect of driving the car on regular basis. The sound/sweet spot of the conversions power to weight/diminutive size of an mx5 means the result is greater the sum of the parts. On the question of value - I think you will find that the large majority of people who have done the conversion are pretty happy with the results.
