I’d like to see a new ‘almost supercar’ along the lines of the new NSX or R8 bearing the Esprit name.
I'd like to see that too but I would probably still go out and buy an NSX instead as quite possibly the most 'almost supercar' for your money at the moment.

I predict it will look amazing but also that the current range will be better to drive.

Ambition is for this to be the easiest Lotus to live with, not the best to drive. As such I don't think Lotus will be playing to their strengths.

Here’s an area where you can compare Porsche and Lotus. Residuals.
Why is a nice low miles S1 111S worth over £20k now when a Boxster S in equally nice condition and with low miles from the same year is worth less than 50% of that?

Conversely why are post 17 Elises still £30k plus? You can buy brand new for under £40.

I’d love another Elise new, before we all have to go electric. I’m sure the forthcoming final or anniversary edition will be right up my cul de sac as well. However,
Much as I’d really like one, it’s just not compelling with a price starting with a 4 let alone 5.

Ah good, ok, that's decided then.

Glad we've got these chips nicely pre-pissed on, got any and all sparks of enthusiasm well damped down and firmly turned our back on what might well be the last petrol powered Lotus.

With that out of the way, what shall we do for the next six months while we wait to say, "I told you so, should be 20K cheaper, 100BHP more and come with a Porsche badge."? Maybe we can all take turns explaining our favourite examples of why things that aren't exactly to our liking are terrible and shouldn't be allowed.

I'll start. People on the internet disagree with me and that just can't be right. tongue out
It could be brilliant but if you take a look at the history here, and know the company, then a degree of tongue in cheek realism will stand you in good stead.

BTW, if you want a Porsche, just go and buy one. Personally, I think it's good to have the choice.

Caterham will be rubbing their hands at the thought of the old Elise being handed to them in 2025-2028

Build it yourself = get out of jail free card re any future emissions rubbish about having to be Ev to be manufactured and sold in uk

Finally indeed. There's been radio silence about the new model since it was first announced as the Type 131 in autumn last year. Interesting to see if it picks up a currently unused pre-existing name - Elan, Elite, Europa, Eclat, Esprit, Excel, or something new.

If only we could guess what the first letter was going to be. Given it's to be the last internal combustion... might I humbly suggest the Lotus Elegy?

I've heard from a good source that it's going to be called the Edna.

Getting rather old but everyone loves her.
Good one. Almost as good as a Mondeo...Though not as good as a BMW.

"... it's not every day (or every year, even) that a new Lotus is confirmed by the CEO."

They've been making those sorts of promises for the last couple of decades with hardly a car to show for it. £2m Evija, Sir? Get lost.

On the other hand "next Elise coming in 2021" has been a pretty regular theme so let's hope the car really is on the way with a sensible price, layout and specification. We should have a guessing game to see what the starting price will be.

I think you are right.
Are you not going to change your current Lotus for a new one then?

I’m expecting something that looks a bit like an Evija with a Volvo infotainment system so your average customer feels like it’s normal civilised car not a toy. Engine from a Volvo to give Geely more margin, I assume it’s cheaper than buying in Toyota units.

Sensible stuff to broaden the appeal. It will probably lose that special something the current cars have but ultimately Geely want to sells cars not popularity contests.

Interesting. Couldnt really care less who's four pot they use, Volvo or Toyota, neither are exotic but with a turbo, they'll go well whatever. Loti are all about that unique delicacy of handling rather than exotic engine for me anyway. So please please dont make it a hybrid, worst of both technologies, cut and shut together to meet the demands of emissions regulations.

You would think / hope, given the chassis development costs that it would have at least been designed to be able to integrate a 50kwh battery further down the line and replace the ICE with a motor reasonably seamlessly. So on the cusp of the electric revolution, its probably not for me right now. I had an Elise back in '99 for a good few years and I'm now in a 992, so I am absolutely target market, and would definitey go back to a Lotus if it ticked the boxes.

But on the cusp of the electric revolution, if it comes with ICE, yeah its just not for me right now, but my deposit is burning a hole in my pocket for the Alpine-Lotus EV which I guess is still 3-4 years away.

I have one of each smile

Although to be fair, mine owe me a whisker under £15k for the pair....

Had two Porsches. Bought an Exige Sport 350 this morning. Arrives tomorrow. Cannot wait.

Hoping Lotus nail this new one too. Would love to see a British marque prosper.

To quote Life of Brian, "You luckee, luckeee bar steward." Enjoy. smile

I had a 1.8s Exige for a few years, now saving pennies towards an Evora.

i love how many people are completely delusional as per car pricing. How the hell can Lotus sell a car for 30k in the quantities that it is aiming for (under 10,000 a year) and still be operational? It is simple business. the fewer cars you sell, the more expensive each one has to be (economies of scale and all that). Lotus MUST increase the price per car or else it will never survive. What lotus needs to do it to justify that price by producing an adequate product. But the people who think a 30k sports car is what lotus should produce are living on cloud cuckoo land.

this might well be a great car, but not an Elise. that really is the best (usable) driver's car ever. Reality is that it will never be replicated because it is too driver centric and will never sell volume, here or anywhere in the world. i have one already but think i'll upgrade to a new end of run model.

new car will be Evora-esque. good, even very good, but not an Elise.
