MB have been replacing subframes on late 00's early 2010's Mercedes under warranty by raising a request via a dealership online portal, regardless of service history or mileage. Failing subframes is a increasingly frequent problem of the C and E class of the era as well as the SLK. MB are doing the right thing and replacing them, and still are as far as I'm aware. Every request I put through was accepted. Worth a go.
That's interesting - I know I need to do a little bit of work on my R171 200K - I can see quite a bit of surface corrosion as well as some "small perforations" in the frame - next time I can go to the dealers (click and collect right now for parts only) I'll have a chat with the guys

Interesting FL2 chat guys, thanks for the knowledge.
Have we discussed that they come with the 3.2? A mate had one, loved it, big tax yes, but smooth and punchy, and no diesel stench. What's not to like? Rare, so hold their £ too.

Eta posted this then you edited yours! Gumtree often turns up in thread sub 100k examples
Some family friends had an FL2 and loved it for years, had an FL1 before it, then they upgraded to the new Disco Sport when it came out. All the biggest petrol engine they could get hold of, now apparently they're hoping to get the plug-in hybrid one.

yikes

These keep coming up for temptingly cheap money at the Anglican Cat Unction. There are a couple in this weekend's sale:

Based on that photo alone, I'm persuaded to keep resisting the temptation.
I find it sad that the C5 A6 saloon is disappearing from our roads whilst the E39 is comparatively common. A wonderful piece of design from when Audi had some identity and style. A proper detail and some nice photos would have this looking a million dollars.

What is the towing capacity of the FL2? These were never on my radar either, but would like to consider an option for future vehicle towing requirements.
I’ve towed more with no issue but 2000kg is the braked towing capacity.
Thanks, is that including the trailer?
Yes, so a good bit short of the discovery’s etc. I tow my boat with it, launch on sandy slips etc. Never had any issues.

I think the only LR product that isn't widely considered "a bit risky" is the Freelander 2,
One of those cars that just vanished overnight.
I'm not sure they've vanished overnight, it's just that no-one is selling their FL2, as they are so reliable, and there's no heir apparent.

If you had a much-loved but long in the tooth FL2, would you replace it with an Evoque? Nope, you'd just give it to The Man for some love, and keep it.
Mine has done just over 186,000 miles and still going strong. Very capable car. Think I’ll run it till it dies. No way would I swap it for an Evoque.
I've long admired the FL2 but never quite made the leap into buying one. LR did a grand job with the design and packaging - to my eyes, they've not really dated. There were some scare stories of steering rack failure, rear diff failure, camshaft failure, auto transmission failure, etc etc... but no doubt disproportionate.

Cat220: is yours SD or TD?
Mine is the TD, it suits the type of car perfectly. The 10 year mark is a big service, other than that regular servicing and consumables it’s been cheap to run. Pulled a few cars out of trouble on a recent sledging trip! smile

Jasper Green IANM. My mate had one for a fair mileage and it was very reliable.

Some rather nice options here.

Particularly like the Amazon as a daily classic, after a little light restore and sympathetic upgrades.

I like that a lot, despite it being the slightly unloved 420... What are they like to run these days? Can parts be had? Would make a great everyday smoker.

I'd like an FL2 to replace the FFRR and the Mrs scenic but the boot doesn't appear to be very big. Have to have another look at them.

Blimey, I had no idea the FL2 was so well thought of in the market. Some of these cars are FFRR money (and will likely cost a lot less to run and maintain!)
The extra ride height means popping up kerbs on the double yellows outside nursery is easy, and they’ve got quite a small footprint and are slab sided so even if you park like a there’s a good chance you’ll end up in between the lines denoting the parking space outside Waitrose.

Joking aside, and ignoring the diesel clatter at idle which like many dervs cannot be heard at speed because of road noise, they’re often very well looked after by people who paid a premium over the faux 4X4 SUV bridgade for a smaller car with relatively little boot space thanks to the high floor. They feel premium. And are very off road capable so are just what you need to get to the stables, as dad has the Shogun to pull the horses when needed.

It helps that Waitrose carpark spaces are 10cm wider than most of its competitors'. wink

On the subject of not touching certain garages with bargepoles that is a garage i'd take a different road to avoid driving past.

Caveat emptor very much the case.

I wonder what happened to the large history file it had when it was sold by H&H in 2019: https://www.handh.co.uk/auction/lot/lot-80---1966-...

Someone is telling porkies here.

You may be surprised. It sold for £5850 at H&H Buxton in 2019. H&H have a 12.5% + VAT buyers premium. So the hammer price was pretty close to 5k. It does not appear that it has any work done since then.

Guide price under £3k, so probably a total pear. I don't care, I'd be cock-a-hoop with that.

I've always admired the C5 A6, with one notable exception. I really don't like the breadbin-meets-bureau-desk bootlid. The rounded off top just doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid. I've seen cars with a small spoiler/wind deflector on the boot, and that's better, but it's still like putting lipstick on a pig.

The Avant version is absolutely fine, mind you... Wanders off to look on Autotrader.
