RE: Hyundai i30 N | PH Used Buying Guide

I like what I read about the i30n performance as the emphasis is on sporty ness and how it makes you feel . The Motor Industry is a wash with cars regarding refinement. There are plenty fast boring cars out there already. We need cars with some character ?
That is a big part of what sold it to me. My i30N replaced a nice Audi and lovely as that was as a daily it was never fun or exciting. Within the first 1/4 mile of the i30N test drive I knew the Audi had to go.I bought a used 18 plate manual hatchback in 2022 and loved the car.
It came with some minor bodywork damage (staining from what looked like a poor dent repair) so I arranged for the dealer to take it back around a month later to sort this.
As the date approached, I had warning lights for the e-LSD. Everything felt fine so I assumed it was a sensor issue, and asked for the dealer to look at it when it went back.
It was a bit of a headache but I was itching to get the car back as soon as it went.
But whilst it was away, the e-LSD was found to be a bigger issue (it was leaking and despite numerous tests they couldn’t figure out why, so had to order a replacement).
Even longer without the car - more of a headache, but I still wanted it back and would look at picture of it every now and then - I’d never loved a car like that before.
Then, a month later, another message. The ABS was faulty and would need replacing. It’d be another 3 months at least.
Heartbroken, I had to sell the car and bought something cheaper to save some cash.
I still love that car even though it was a massive headache and I only actually drove it for about 2 months. It’ll be the one that got away, and I’ll always keep the pictures of it.
But could I honestly buy one again knowing what I know? Probably not. It’s like your first love - it’ll always have a special place in my mind but it’d make no sense to go back.
I wish everyone could enjoy these cars at some point because they’re such a joy for a car lover, but as the article suggests, there are plenty of niggles and any owner who has to worry about adult things like finances, reliability and overall headaches might have to stick to something more traditional in the long run.
Have to admire Hyundai for trying, though. And what an effort this car was.

Shame you had such a bad experience with yours.
Mine was the only car I’ve had in over 20 years of driving that didn’t have a single fault.
Had it for about 18 months from brand new and beat the absolute hell out of it from mile 1.
I’ve already told myself if I need to go back to a more sensible car another i30 would be my first stop
