I've also got to throw a nod to the Arnage T.

Proper weapon.

Looked at one of these instead of buying a TVR (I know they don’t seem like two cars that you’d normally choose between but I love them both for different reasons). The Arnage has so much presence. Massively powerful and a lovely place to spend time. I couldn’t believe how many people noticed the car. I’d like to have one in the future, but think it could be ruinous!

In terms of value, the Jag XJs punched well above their weight and in fact were probably the best , full stop, for a while there.
Yeah, I like the XJs. Any gen in particular? X305/X350/X351 etc?
I only have experience of the original generation; a V12 Series 3 in my case. It was a special thing to drive.
I’d give a shout to the 351, even in 3.0d guise it was a lovely thing to drive, zf 8sp though was much better than the 6sp, handled better than its counterparts due to being much lighter (all relative) never got to try the xjr before we bought the S63, mainly due to the awful interior of the xjr.

Surely a Rolls Royce Phantom must be near the top of the tree.
Phantom 6, yes - as used by HM The Queen. Current one, maybe not. Too bling, not much class though.

To my mind, cars like Rolls Royce and Bentley spring to mind.

Bentley have built luxury cars for years and still do. Some upstart bought the name because they couldn't produce the brand.

Perhaps closer to the OPs suggestion, I had a Lexus GS430 for a few years. When you’re 300 miles from home on a wet Friday evening after a week away for work, those spacious and supportive armchairs, creamy smooth and effortless V8, excellent stereo, and plush ride made the journey home feel much shorter than it might otherwise. Great cars.

Best luxury saloon has to have a V12
I thin there's a strong argument these days that a perfect luxury saloon should have an electric motor. Not that anyone has really dont an ultra-luxury EV yet, as far as I know?
Definitely potential I'd say, although none around yet, I'd bet on an electric phantom in the next few years.

I was hoping it might be the next XJ, but Jag seem to have canned it.

I get that they're making the point it's electric. But it looks like a goldfish having a dump.

It's not going to be 5 series when things like the Grosser and Phantom exist.

You'd probably have to throw in the Maybach too if we're prioritising luxury over all over aspects.

Me too, they're on my ebay watch list permanently laugh I also like TVRs, there must be some crossover there, both british bruiser cars but for different reasons.

They're brilliant, only let down by presence. They don't particularly make you feel special, which I guess an ultimate luxury saloon should.

Bugatti or Bentley... Tough choice. Think I'd take the Bentley for that interior alone. I've lived in places with a smaller living room.

Funnily enough, I have albeit briefly. I mentioned earlier that my dad worked for RR, so have been in most of their cars up to the early 90s at some point.
